Keyes Carson—

was a short one with an insurance
salesman. Then came another
short ride with an old sailor. Fin
ally, he was driven into Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, by a young man who
worked in the New York Stock
Exchange.
It was 2 a. m. Saturday morn
ing when Keyes arrived in Pitts
burgh, and from there to Canton,
Ohio, the going was slow and dis
couraging. Already eighteen hours
on the road and only 450 miles
towards his goal, it is little won
der that he was becoming down
hearted. Finally, however, a sales
man drove him to Chicago. “This
was one of the most interesting
rides of the entire trip,” Keyes
said. “He knew his business
thoroughly and explained many
things about selling which have
proved valuable to me since that
time.”
Leaving Chicago, his luck once
again hit the down path. His first
ride was with two old men, but
Keyes left them as soon as possi
ble—they were driving consistant-
ly at a rate of speed not exceeding
twenty miles an hour. His next
ride was with a boy and two pretty
girls. “I hated to leave this ride,”
he pointed out, “but I couldn’t af
ford to lose time having dates.”
On the road again, he was given
a ride by a young man who had
apparently just lost his sweet
heart and who left little doubt
in Keyes’ mind as to the lack of
friendship he held for feminine-
kind.
Arriving in Cedar Rapids, Mich
igan, his next ride took him to Des
Moines, Iowa. Here, once again,
his usually good luck deserted him.
First he took the wrong street car
and then went fifty miles in the
wrong direction, causing him to
lose several hours valuable time.
Finally arriving in Columbus,
Ohio, he was given a ride by a
driver who turned out to be thor-

receives his pass to leave for the
first sergeants and when the cadet
receives his pass to leave for the
weekend, enough cards will be
given him to make the trip. There
oughly drunk. Keyes lost no time
in getting out of the car and, later,
he came upon the car overturned
in a ditch, although its driver was
not killed.
And then the luckiest ride of all:
with a news reporter headed for
California. Sixteen hundred miles
driving night and day, the two of
them taking turns at the wheel.
Four days from New York to
San Francisco—he had done it,
even beating his own goal!
•
Next time: San Francisco back
to Texas again, completing the
trip in sixteen days.

Some women never do learn the best way to hold a man is to
let go—at the right moment. Will Dover’s steatopygic wife
sagged the scales at 220—but it was her heavy hand that
got her in trouble! (Plenty of chuckles in this one!) A short story.
