During his high school years at Port Arthur’s Stephen F. Austin High School, Johnny compiled a record of 26 A’a and 6 B’s. He played on b>>th the football and basketball tea ms of his school and was president of the low senior dass and a member of several school dubs. During “off” hours, he held an N.YA. job doing secretarial work for the principal of his school and also for the regi mental sergeant-major of the head quarters company of the Texas National Guard at Port Arthur. When informed that he was the winner, Yarta declared: “I’ll never be able to express the real grati tude I feel toward the Port Arthur alumni of the A. A M.
