THE BATTALION 7 Ag-g-ie Grid Leaders Matty Bell, head coach; Klepto Holmes, line coach; Graceton Floyd, captain—these are the leaders of the Aggie gridsters who will open their 1930 schedule Saturday afternoon on Kyle Field with Southwestern University. Sports Bits— (Continued from page 6) of our championship hopes. Well, maybe so. But the Aggies are generally pre-seasonally rated near the bottom—and we have a clear title to undisputed lead in the Southwest conference for the last twelve years. Every championship was brought home after we were doomed to cellar ledership by the scribes. In spite of all predictions, our guess is that the Aggies will place more linemen on the all-confer ence selection than any other school. Among the most promising sophomores trying out for the line is G. P. Lord, and this boy shows plenty of what it takes. He is a hard fighter, and is good when it comes to getting down the field after punts—being the second fastest man on the squad. His work Saturday in the scrim mage stamped him as one who is going to cause the regulars a tight fight if they want to hold their places. T. C. U. opened the conference season Friday by swamping the Denton Teachers, 47-0. Coach Schmidt has a real conference threat up there in Ft. Worth, with a heavy line and a fast backfield. They repeated Satur day by tromping on the East Texas Teachers 40-0, using prac tically a sophomore team. T. C. U. is starting something new in the conference by playing two games in one wek-end. This is great for publicity and to give green players a chance, but snap games never bring out weak nesses. Anyone can break a twig, but a trunk is a different matter. T. C. U.’s first trunk comes when they play Arkansas on the eleventh. Saturday’s scrimmage brought forth something unusual when the so-called second string broke loose to win over the first string. Trouble is that it is kinda hard to tell just what is the first string yet—there are about thir ty of just about equal ability on the squad. Willie Wolf did some mighty nice blocking that made way for some of the long runs and nice passing that Harling did. Dawson has improved con siderably over last season, and is beginning to play real football at tackle. While you are watching the varsity athletes performing on Kyle Field don’t forget that the intramural department offers a sport program that will enable everyone to prove his athletic ability. There is a sport to fit any size, shape or figure. Soph omores are wanted to try out for intramural managers. Don’t forget, the game starts promptly at three bells Saturday afternoon. Get right, ol’ army, get right, and let’s get behind those eleven warriors and carry this war to the finish—win or lose. oOo Pirates Invade— (Continued from page 1) Aggies since the opening of their camp and promise a hard fought con test. For the probable starting lineup, Southwestern will have Williams, left end; A. Smith, tackle; Mercer, left guard; May, center; Lunsford, right guard; Ross, right tackle; Aiken, right end; Seaman, quarter; G. Smith, left half; Cochran, right half; and Gie- secke, full back. The Aggie line is blessed this year by unusual speed, and weight, in ad dition to abundant supply of reserves as good as the regulars. The back- field is light, but has plenty of speed and trickiness coupled with some ex cellent defensive players. Coach Matty Bell has at least two good men to fill every place on the Aggie eleven, so it is difficult to give even a probable starting lineup. However, every man on the squad will probably be given a chance to show his worth before the final whistle blows. Phillips, Harling, or Stitler, will be given the job of piloting the team at quarterback, as these three have been outstanding candidates for the position left vacant by Tommy Mills. Left half will be started by either Aston or Zumwalt; Floyd or Woodman will begin at full; and Wolf or Dansby at right half. The most difficult selection comes in picking a line. Prac- tically all candidates have about equal ability, and there are no outstanding choices for any position. Tracy and Malone have both been do ing good work at left end; Magrill and Dawson are running for the job at left tackle; Lord or Christian, will start at left guard; Guseman may start if his sprained ankle is entirely well; center will be filled by either Abbey or Nolan; Van Zandt, Moore, or Hornsby will be the choice for right guard; right tackle will be held down by either Moulden or Hill; McFadden or Emmons will open at right end. The corps will occupy the east as usual and will enter the east side gate. Everybody be there early, and remember there is nothing much bet ter than good Pirate meat for easing throats after a hard afternoon’s yell ing. Gang, let’s get gone on that long ol’ road home—do it right, “and there shall be no regrets”.
