THE BATTALION 5 School for Firemen Is Held at A, & M. The first annual school for fire men was held at the A. and M. Col lege Monday and Tuesday, under the auspices of the Department of Chem istry and Chemical Engineering, and the Bryan Fire Department. The program consisted of a variety of helpful and constructive lectures as well as some few demonstrations and exhibitions given by faculty members and delegates to the school. It is hoped that the short course will become an annual affair at the college. There were 177 delegates present. The various methods of irrigating and the importance of irrigation in present day agriculture demonstrated to the visitors by a model irrigation system including terraced fields, will be the highlight of the Agricultural Engineering Department’s contribu tion to the Engineering exhibits Sat urday. Other features will include various layouts of farms, model farm build ings, cotton strippers, farm tractors, a combined harvester-thresher, elec tric lighting plants, water supply systems, and other practical squip- ment typifying modern agriculture. Small Countryside Presented by C. E.’s J Exhibits contributed to the Engin eering Show, Saturday, by the Civil Engineering Department will be in three sections, materials and high ways, municipal and sanitary. and hydraulics. A miniature countryside, a composition of the work of many students, including railways, towns, building-s, highways, bridges, and trestles, watertowers embankments and tunnels, will be on display. The material and highway section has placed highway signs to direct visitors to the various displays and exhibits in the building. The most outstanding exhibits and displays are of asphalt produced 'in Texas and made into Texas pavements with methods of testing this road materi al. Steel will be made to behave like rubber bands with the aid of testing machines from the strengfh-of-ma- terials laboratory. The municipal and sanitary sec tion will exhibit the Imhoff tank, op erate the aereation unit and remove the coloring matter from water. The hydraulics section will dem onstrate some of the applications of water for power and irrigation pur poses, and as a side-light, prove that water will flow up hill.
