College halls seem to have a de cided edge on the little red school- house as a training ground for indus trial leadership, according to facts just compiled by The Sherman Corpo ration, engineers. The careers of one hundred men who direct the destinies of many of the richest industrial cor porations in the United States were studied, as presumably being typical of the careers of executives in places of large leadership. Only 122 received a formal education limited by the walls of the red schoolhouse. Four teen went on to secondary school but did not go to college. Sixty-four at tended college and three out of the 64 took advanced degrees. The study was made in connection with the Sherman Corpoi*ation’s re searches into the present trend to ward merger, after these merger re searches had seemed to indicate that management leadership is the factor of limitation in merger successes. Only 4 of the group are of foreign birth. Twenty-nine per cent are of rural origin. Forty per cent were born in cities of over 100,000 population. Seventy-one per cent originated in communities of 5,000 population and over. The ages of the men studied indi cate that from 50 to 70 are the years when large leadership capacities come to fruition. Only two men of the group are in the 30-40 year decade; further age grouping being- by dec ades—40-50, 13 men; 50-60, 34 men; 60-70, 35 men; 70-80, 14 men; and over 80 years of age, 2 men.
