“Count” Sugareff.
The “Count” ’sail right, everybody
will tell you that. He isn’t really a
count, but he speaks with an accent,
is a prince of a fellow and a king
in the use of good humored sar
casm, so he has earned his “noble”
nickname. However, he does have a
title—lots of them; he is Vangel
Kanstantine Sugareff; Professor of
History, A. and M. College of Tex
as; A. B. Syracuse; A. M., Harvard;
and is now working on a Ph. D.
from Columbia.
He was born in Monastir, Turkey,
and there went through grade and
high school. The Count was fourteen
then, and said to himself, “Sugareff,
cheer-r up, you are going to the
United States and go to College.”
And he’s been going ever since,
though only a short while as a stu
dent. In 1918, he received his mas
ter’s degree from Harvard and.
took a position in the history depart
ment of the Akron Ohio Public
schools. Then six years ago he heard
of A. and M., with her two thousand
and some “Farmer boys” surrounded
by ‘bullneck’ and quizz’s and Army
officers, and decided to come down
and ‘cheer-r them up.’
The ‘Count’ has made a success of
it too. He mixes con-grat-u-lations,
Magna Cartas, wittisms, revolutions,
dates and facts and mets it out to
would-be engineers exposed to His
tory, in such a way that they don’t
mind the dose at all, in fact most
of them enjoy it. The ‘Count’ gets a
huge kick out of life, he likes ten
nis and Chancellor cigars, swimming

and horseback riding, but his great
est pleasure is teaching history. How
ever, his interests reach beyond
sports and the classroom, and he
finds time for a great many cam
pus activities. He has been a speak
er of the Open Forum in Dallas;
Chairman of the Campus Religious
Forum; President and also Secre
tary of the Social Science Seminar.
The ‘Count’ has been around a lot
too. Last year, he made an extensive
tour of Europe collecting data for
his Ph. D. thesis. In his college days
he lectured in over thirty states.
Through lecturing and other work, he
earned every cent of his school and
college expenses.
When he was asked how he felt
towards our school he said, “A. and
M. spirit is sterling, it is so be
cause A. and M. boys are sterling,
because the homes of A. and M.
boys are sterling. It is an attraction,
an inspiration for a teacher; no
where are boys just like those of
A. and M. There are a few who
are too slow and a few who are too
smart, but all are good fellows and
fine sports.”
The ‘Count’ is another true Aggie
and we are proud to be under
‘Prexy’s Moon’ with him.
CAGE MEN GETTING
IN CONDITION
Coach John B. Reid’s cage team
has begun getting their eyes on
the basket and making prepara
tions for the first practice which
will be held November 1st. The Con
ference rule prohibits any team
starting practice before this time,
but members of the team are taking
daily workouts to get their eye on
the basket and be in perfect physi
cal condition when Coach Reid be
gins real work. All men interested
in trying out for the Varsity team
should get in touch with Coach Reid
this week so that when practice
does start all the preliminary work
will be done and the coaches may be
gin at once on the fundamentals.
Other members of the Conference
have already had meetings in which
training and other important items
have been mentioned. T. C. U. and
Texas aspirants have been condi
tioning themselves for some time,
and Captain Buster Keeton, not to
be outdone, has been getting his
men on the line too. No plays nor
fundamentals are being taken up.
Trying out for the editorial board, Simpson,
’33, is all energy. Here, there and every
where to cover events, he is busy on the
write and rewrite—confident that
experience will fit him for the post.
And Jones, his roommate, shows
equal determination in football.
Tackling, bucking the line, practicing
signals, he trusts to solid ground-work
to get him on the scrub this year.
Good training, both of them.
Perhaps there is something in high
scholarship, too. Industrial leaders
of today think so.
