Strange as it may seem, or even,
believe it or not, Francis Schmidt,
the mentor of numerous Champion
ship Arkansas basketball teams, nev
er played on a college basketball
team. He was a football and base
ball star at Nebraska, but never
played on the cage teams.

They have a freshman star at S.
M. U. that will equal our own little
Oran Dawson, varsity football tackle.
Howard Sprague, former Oak Cliff
high school fullback, tips the beams
at 215 pounds and stands 6 feet 3
inches in his nude lower extremities.
You can bite this one off, but try and
chew it—he wears size 12 1-2 shoes.

The Mustangs carried fifty gallons
of good old Dallas water along on
the train when they played the Ne
braska Cornhuskers last Saturday.
Coach Ray Morrison wanted to take
no chances with the water there
disagreeing with his players.

By the way, these Mustangs play
ed a nice game against Bible’s club.
In fact, they won that old prover
bial moral victory.

The T. C. U. cross country team
started their season’s training this
past week, with Bud Norman, cap
tain of the ’28 track team, handling
the runners. They have a meet book
ed with S. M. U. for November 9.

Texas will find a difficult job
awaiting them next week when they
arrive in Arkansas for their first
Conference game. The Arkansas of
ficials, anxious to win at least one
game with Southwestern teams, have
named October 12th as Home Coming
Day and thereby gave the Porkers
their first victory. Only once in the
dim and distant has a team ever
defeated the Hogs on that day and
it is not likely that this precedent
wdll be broken this year.

To date the Christians have had
3 first down made on them, one by
Simmons and two by Daniel Baker.

These games mark the beginning
of Physical Education’s proposed pro
gram to have every student partic
ipate in some form of athletics
every day from 4:00 o’clock until
5:30. Every student is urged to avail
himself of the use of Kyle Field
in all supervised sports. Beginning
next week the College tennis racquet
wielders will be started on their way
to the College Championships and
the following week speedball enthus
iasts will be given their sport. This
is a game that is a mixture of bas
ketball, football, and a few other
sports and it has become very pop
ular on this campus, promising to
push, playground ball and basketball
for the popular sports.
The cross country meet will be
staged in about one month and men
are urged to begin getting in condi
tion for this cross country tour.
The Intramural Department has
just published its third Students’
Handbook for the information and
use of the students.
It contains last year’s records and
a comparative record of the last
three years, rules, time for beginning
of sports, and much' other valuable
information for those who will par
ticipate in Intramurals. Several of
the intramural rules have been
