lowed to charge only half price paid
to professional propagators and a
very great demand for their services
has grown up. Realizing the value
of the practical experience to the stu
dents and the enormous profit to the
state of converting the native trees
to improved production Dean Kyle is
promoting the work with enthusiasm.
He estimates that three-fourths of the
75 milion trees in Texas now worth
less could be made profitable produc
ers of commercial quality pecans by
budding improved varities to the pres
ent stock. From this process the trees
will bear from the bud stock in profit
able quantities in two or three years.
Other notable work accomplished by
Dean Kyle in the interest of the pecan
industry is in his joint authorship of
a textbook of agriculture adopted by
the Texas Textbook Commission last
year and of which over 100,000 copies
which have had wide distribution over
bulletins on budding and cultivation
which has had wide distribution over
the state and into other states.
Joining Dean Kyle in the production
of the new book is H. P. Stuckey, di
rector of the Georgia Agricultural
Experiment Station. Thus in the pre
sentation of the material both the
eastern and western sections of the
pecan growing district are represent
ed. Every phase of the subject is
treated in the book extending from
the history and botany of the pecan
through planting, improvement, har
vesting and marketing and including
all the work concerned in growing,
and marketing. In the words of the
author “an effort has been made to
include the latest results of scientific
investigations on gecan growing. A
large part of the material has never
been published before. In addition
the important practical phases of the
work including the latest methods and
practices of pecan growing and pro
pagation have been emphasized. Con
sequently this volume will be useful
not only to students, instructors and
investigators in pecan culture but al
so to the growers, amateurs and
others interested in the subject.”

of the Banryard Dance, followed by
yardthe Corps Dance which are al
ways interesting, the between periods
promise sto be anything but a dull
and uninteresting three days.

Did you see what’s being done to
the drill field? Oak trees are being
planted on the east edge of the drill
field along Houston Street. At pres
ent, the trees have the appearance
of posts, but a year or so will see
them budding with their branches and
generous green leaves, giving the drill
field a dressy and dignified appear
ance.
How much easier our work would
be if we put forth as much effort
trying to improve the quality of it as
most of us do trying to find excuses
for not properly attending to it.—
