Inside Dope. “Well, all right,” grumpled the rum-runner, “I’ll swap. But you gotta give me two cases of Scoth for one case of rye.” “You’re a robber!” howled the Fed eral agent. Nevertheless, the trade was consummated. Whereupon the Federal agent wired his chief that he had exchanged shots with the enemy. The A. and M. Cadet Band has al ways been noted for its size and qual ity of music produced. This year the band is not only much larger than it was last year, but also better in other ways. Warrant Officer R. J. Dunn is large ly responsible for the very favorable impression the band is making where- ever it is heard. Bandmaster Dunn is a newcomer at College. For thir teen years he was director of an army band at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. In 1918 he took a bandmas ter’s examination at Paris, France, in competition with 205 other men. Only ten of these passed, and Mr. Dunn was second. He is devoting much time to working with the band, and has succeeded in obtaining the cooperation of every one in it. It looks very much as if the band is going to be better than it has ever been before. It is interesting to observe how the band has grown. Four years ago there were 53 men in it. The next year it increased to 65, and last year included 76 musicians. This year there are 86 men in the band. At the beginning of the year fifty-two freshmen tried out for the band, and only thirty-nine were accepted. The U. S. Government furnishes in struments for forty-eight men. Last week the new music pouches were ob tained. They add greatly to the snap py appearance of the band. Several new instruments were also obtained last week. These new instruments are a sarrussophone, two bassoons, two oboes, two alto clarinets, and two bass clarinets. In Waco last Saturday the band made a distinct “hit.” In Austin at Thanksgiving it should show up still better. All in all, our band is one A. and M. institution that is always out standing.
