TEE LONGHORNS
ARE LEADING
IN BASKETBALL
Horned Frogs Running CIos« Second,
Baylor Third and Aggies
Breaking Even
The Texas Longhorns, with a vet
eran team and a new basketball sys
tem to work with, are leading the
Southwestern Conference Basketball
race and from present indications will
continue to lead it unless the Texas
Aggies can stop the Orange basket-
eers when they meet them in Austin
in January. The Longhorns have a
great team and with a shrewd devel
oper at the helm they should waltz
through with two wins over the Bay
lor Bears Friday and Saturday nights.
Texas had little trouble in winning
from Oklahoma A. and M. and that
team was considered one of the fa
vorites in the struggle for the cham
pionship and later in the series with
the Owls the Longhorns showed great
improvement in goal-shooting. Bay
lor was lucky to win the second game
vith the Aggies and are probably
higher now in the conference stand
ing than they will be at any other
time this year.
The Aggies take on a little rest af
ter they return from Dallas, Wednse-
day, for if the Owls run true to form
Jiey have, been showing against the
other teams they should not be hard
for the Aggies to trim. Rice always
gives A. and M. a battle and this se
ries may be no exception to the gen
eral rule.
Friday and Saturday T. C. U. meets
the Oklahoma Aggies in Fort Worth
and if Oklahoma recovers from the
beatings that Texas gave them they
may be able to walk off with one of
the games. The Frogs had little
trouble disposing of S. M. U., but
neither did Oklahoma, and Fort
Worth should see real battles when
the two fives come together.
From .now on it looks to be a ques
tion as to wh ocan stop the flying
Longhorns with the other teams fight
ing for trailing positions. T. C. U.
does not play Texas and once the
Longhorns are downed it may be nec
essary for someone to kick the Frogs
over in order to win, but such a sit
uation is too remote to consider at
present.
Got some good news for the base
ball men. Barran McCullough, star
of last year’s freshman baseball
team over at Texas and hurler de
luxe, has withdrawn from school and
more than likely will go back to
Texas. Hot dog!
Prof: The gods have drank nec
tar? This is"a case of the verb be
ing incorrect. Give me a more desir
able case.
Student (very sleepy): Er; a case
of Haig and Haig, sir.
In First Game Were Powerless in
Hands of Aggies—Turned Tables
in Second Game.
Completely outclassed, the Bears
took an awful drubbing at the hands
of the Aggies last Friday night. Play
ing on their new court they were pow
erless against the defense against
which they flung themselves time af
ter time, and they were equally as
helpless against the staggering of
fensive which the quintet from Aggie-
land forced upon them. The score
would indicate that it was a race track
affair, but the 21 to 4 does not express
exactly the tenseness of the conflict.
Saturday night things were just
the reverse—the offensive of the Ag
gies netting only nine points, while
that of the Baylor five netted fifteen.
Not a man that composed the five
which started this second game for
the Aggies, made a field goal. Darby
dropped in two out of three tries at
free throws. Somethin’ wrong, some
thin’ wrong.
First Game.
Long shots featured the affair of
Friday night—Darby leading with
three from near the center of the court
which is his specialty. Gill started
the game off by shooting one from
the middle of the floor. Washburn,
playing his running guarding game,
broke up the Baylor dribbling game
time after time as they tried to pass
through the center. Baylor’s offense
consisted mostly of two men going
parallel down the court, the man car
rying the ball going directly down the
center and the other one going down
the side. The dribbler would pivot,
pass back to a man trailing him who
would then pass over the Aggies’
heads in an effort to get- the ball to
the man who had gone down the side
lines.
The play was solved by the Aggie
guards, but Baylor, instead of see
ing that it did not gain them any
thing, continued to use it for their of
fensive. Had they resorted to more
of a defensive game the score would
not have been so one-sided. They used
a five man defense during the first
half of the game but in the second
half they used a man for man defense
and things tightened down a bit.
The first half of the game ended
with the score standing 13 to 1. Dar
by made three goals during the first
period. Chambless made the one for
Baylor. Fouls were few and the game
as a whole was a clean one.

Looks like this Athletic Depart
ment has a hard time staying singly.
Bet Johnnie Pierce leads off before
long and Frank Anderson will have
to follow or maybe it’ll be the other
way around.

Arkansas University makes her
debut into the Southwestern Con
ference basketball world this week
end when they meet S. M. U. This
is the first year that the Razorbacks
have ever put out a school basket
ball team and their big football star,
a sophomore by the name of Corgan,
is the captain. They play twelve
conference games and ought to make
a fair showing.

Heard lots of criticism over the
way Ramp officiated that series in
Waco. The boys that saw it said
he let Baylor get away with murder.
Surely he is fair or he wouldn’t be
officiating in the Southwestern Con
ference but he ought to go some
where and watch real basketball
played awhile and get these football
ideas out of his head.

Swartz and Esquival tied up in a
fight down at Rice the other night
during the Texas-Rice series. Es
quival ought to be a hard man to
climb as he won the middle-weight
boxing championship over at Texas
last year. Maybe Swartz didn’t know
that.

Last week I mentinoned in a cas
ual sort of manner that Big George
T. C. U. center, was a real basket
ball player even if he was big and
ugly. Since then I learned that he
jumped on Jimmy Kitts up at S. M.
U. one time for less than that so just
vanted to take this opportunity to
?tate that I didn’t really mean he
was ugly. I should have said he was
distinguished looking or maybe man
ly looking but never ugly. If you
look at him in the right manner he’s
really beautiful.

Bunch of Juniors came into my
room the other night and wanted to
look at last year’s Junior Banquet
and a few minutes later Doc Killion
came in and wanted to borrow soma
handcuffs so the banquet must be
getting under way. Lee May says
he will have his detachment of the
Northwest Mounted Police on hand
to protect the toastmaster.

The inter-company football sea
son is stepping along. The First and
Third seem to be the favorites
among the campus experts but most
any of the others may upset the
dope. The league doesn’t seem to
be as fast as it was last year but the
teams are more evenly balanced and
more new material will be uncov
ered.
