THE FORMAL OPENING OF THE
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
BUILDING
The Mechanical Engineering De
partment formally opened their new
building Saturday evening, March
27, 1920, with a reception followed
by a dance at Sbisa Hall Annex.
The visitors were received by Prof.
E. J. Fermier and Mrs. W. B. Bi:s-
zell who conducted them through the
receiving line composed of Dean
and Mrs. Nagle, Major and Mrs. L.
L. Mclnnis, Dean Puryear, Mrs.
Fermier, Prof, and Mrs. H. E. Smith,
Professor and Mrs. E. O. Slater, Mr.
and Mrs. L. L. Chapelle, and officers
of the M. E. Society, “Pat” Hamil
ton and I. H. Bettis.
The building is one that the M. E.
department may well be proud of
and marks another mile stone in the
rapid growth of the College due to
the earnest effort of our President.
The building is of unusual design but
was built to meet the special needs
of the M. E. Department and at the
same time conform to the State laws
for fire protection. The designers de
serve credit for working the fire-
itower and other regulations so
uniquely into the building and these
features alone demonstrate the prac
ticability of enclosed stairways in
school structures. The most strik
ing feature of the new building is
the drinking fountain on each floor.
This is quite a treat to the students
and it would be well for other de
partments to follow this example.
The new building was beautifully
decorated with palms and ferns and
offices and class rooms were thrown
open to public inspection. The
museum with its many cuts, models,
and examples of work turned out in
■fcj^^^k^J9om^tment attracted the
also Holick’s
Novelty Orchestra added to the at
traction and success of the recep
tion.
At nine o’clock the visitors were
invited to a dance given by the de
partment in Sbisa Hall Annex. The
grand march was led by Professor
E. J. Fermier and Mrs. W. B. Biz-
zell, followed by Major Ike Ashburn
and Mrs. E. J. Fermier.
The dance was one of the most en
joyable of the year. The music was
the best that Holick’s Novelty Or
chestra could rended and that is say
ing the best in the South. The or
chestra was placed in the center of
the hall and surrounded by palms
and ferns.
The dance and reception were well
planned and was a success in every
respect. A large crowd was present
and a most general, generous and
heartfelt pleasure was expressed by
all present.
A number of out of town guests
were in attendance on invitation of
the students and officers of the Col
lege with exception of personal
friends of individual students of the
College.
THE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS’
ENTERTAINMENT.
For the purpose of exhibiting
what we have in the Electrical En
gineering department and to furnish
an entertainment for the students
and friends of the College, the stu
dents and instructors of Electrical
Engineering will stage a novelty
show and electrical equipment dis
play on the ninth of April. Every
one is invited; its all free and its in
formal. We want you to come over
and enjoy the evening. The show
will start at 3 o’clock and the whole
thing will run until midnight. Part
of the program is given below:
Among the electrical novelties to
be shown are:
The magic ring—we guarantee
that you can’t pitch a ring with a 2
inch hole in it over an inch knob.
Nor can you place the ring over the
knob and hold it there.
Music by wireless. We promise
you that you can’t locate the source
of music.
Disappearing flowers. See if you
can tell where they go.
Pail welding. An iron welded to
gether in a bucket of water.
We will have about fifty of the
above kind of electric stunts. We
will also have a display of electrical
equipment for the farm, the down
town residence, the store and some
for the automobile—everything from
a lightning bug on up.
A display of the laboratory equip
ment will be shown, including the
photometer, the osillograph, the slip-
meter, tochometer, watt meter, volt
meters, ammeters, Mazda, ohmsifter,
etc.
Then we’re going to have a few
eats and the jolly young people will
probably want to do the light fan
tastic, too.
Come over and we will have a
shock for each and everyone.

Professors Bailiff and Cahn have
offered a silk shirt to the baseball
