THE BATTALION
AGGIE NINE OPENS
SEASON SUCCESSFULLY
Farmers Show Real Class in Win-
nin the First Three Games of
This Season.
The Aggies inaugurated the 1920
baseball season last week by admin
istering a stinging defeat to the
Soldier boys of the 37th Infantry.
The doughboys were shut out to a
11-0 tune and let down with only two
hits, both in the ninth inning off re
cruit Ehlert. Sprague and Farrell
held the visitors hitless in the first
seven frames and led by Lackey and
Captain Lewis the home club batted
around eleven runs.
Austin College opened the Collegi
ate season and followed in the wake
of the retreating lads in khaki. In
the first game young Mr. Henderson
completely subjugated the leaping
Kangaroos, leting them down with
one run and only five hits. The far
mers displayed a nervousness that re
sulted in six bad errors but continued
their batting bee by connecting for
eleven safe blows. Lackey kept up
his hitting streak and Matthews
broke into the scorer’s graces with a
pair of timely bingles. The work
of Crawford behind the bat was an
eye-opener to many A. and M. fans
and the big boy looks like the best
receiver in the state this year. The
infield still displayed a tendency to
boot the ball around a trifle more than
was necessary but a few errors are
to be expected at this time of the
year.
The second game was another
loosely played, free hitting exhibition
with the Farmers victorous by a score
" 1 3-7 Both clubs hit the ball hard;
Lackey and Matthews clouting hom
ers for the Aggies and Estes for the
visitors. Every Farmer got a hit ex
cept Guynes and in addition to the
above circuit drives Lackey and
Matthews hit for extra bases. For
the Kangaroos the work of Morehart
at short stood out while Senabough
did some effective work with the stick.
Higginbotham looked a little more
like his old self at short and man
aged to collect two singles and tally
twice in four trips to the plate.
Sprague and Olsen were kept in hot
water by the errors and poor judg
ment at times of their teammates but
maintained excellent control under
fire. Glezen made a sensational catch
of Love’s long drive in the eighth
and hit safely three times. As a
team the proteges of Coach Bible are
looking fine and a third championship
seems headed for the Farmer biv
ouac.

BASEBALL OUTLOOK
The baseball candidates have been
practicing faithfully for the last two
months and every day the outlook
for a championship team looks
brighter. The thing that gladdens
the hearts of the rooters is the con
fidence with which the team hits. A.
and M. has the best batting squad
they have shown in the last five
years.
The catchers the first part of the
season were a source of worry to the
coaches but Crawford, Moore and
Dinan are coming through splen
didly.
The infield is an airtight propo
sition; Captain Lewis, Higginbotham,
Lackey, Dwyer, Wilson, Smith and
Rothe form an aggregation from
which can be picked two good in
fields any day that it is necessary.
The outfield is the pride of the lot.
With Lefty Matthews, Glezen and
Guynes, Alexander and Henderson,
the ground is amply covered and
they are all terrors to the opposing
pitchers when they step to the plate.
The pitchers at the first of the sea
son looked to be the weakest de
partment of the team. Daniel’s sick
ness left a big hole which was hard
to fill and he will probably not be
seen in a uniform this year. How
ever, the improvement shown by the
remaining pitchers is enough to give
the cadets a feeling of confidence in
the final outcome. Henderson, Alex
ander, Farrell, Olsen and Cox, right
handers, and Sprague and Matthews,

Perfectly-Fitting Glasses
are constantly performing an almost marvelous work in the
relief of eye strain and defective vision. They represent
a great deal more than mere merchandise—they represent
a high degree of professional skill in their prescribing and
almost as much mechanical skill in their building.
Satisfaction in Glasses
that distinctive kind of optical service that insures com
