THE BAT T ALIGN
TENNIS ASSOCIATION
TOURNAMENT OPEN
The College Tennis Association
opens its first tournament on Satur
day afternoon of March 20. This
tournament is unofficial and is open
to all members of the association.
The play will be in singles only and
will give the coach, Professor W. H.
Thomas, a clearer idea of the line-up
of available maitlerial. Immediately
following this unofficial tournament
regular play will be begun to decide
upon the members of a squad of ap
proximately eight men.
Arrangements have been made to
place the training squad at the train
ing table in the mess hall, and a
picture of the squad will be made in
time for the issue of the Longhorn.
Two courts will be reserved for the
squad and the men will play reg-
lularly under the close tutelage of
Mr. Thomas. The Coach is confi
dent that fast teams can be deve
loped from the material available.
Plans are being made for a com
plete tournament within the College
before the end of this school term.
The play will consist of singles, mens
doubles and mixed doubles. Appro
priate trophies will be presented to
the winners in each division.
Mr. A. M. Waldrop will give a
beautiful loving cup, to be known as
the Waldroy trophy, to the winner in
singles. This winner is to have his
name engraved on the cup and is to
hold the cup for one year. This cup
will be played for each season. This
interest in Tennis at the College as
manifested by Mr. Waldrop is ap
preciated by all lovers of the sport,
and it is certain that this will be felt
as an added incentive to harder and
faster play.
The Association has a paid up
membership approaching fifty mem
bers and as many more have express
ed a desire to join. The Secretary
in Room 9, Austin Hall, E. A. Var-
nell in 3 Milner, L. G. Jones at the
Y. M. C. A. and Pope Lancaster in
70 Leggett have membership cards
for all those who are interested.
Quite a number of the Campus ladies
have expressed a desire to join, and
plans will soon be complete for a mix
ed doubles play with no less than
twelve teams. Certain of the Cam
pus ladies will have charge of the
Women’s Division of the Association
and every woman who plays tennis
will have the opportunity to play
during this term.
The interest in tennis at the Col
lege is permanent, and the season is
opening with a very cheerful pros
pect. A foundation is being laid
which will establish tennis as a per-
manant major sport in the College
and winning teams will be developed
each year.
The camps for instruction in in
fantry for students in the Reserve
Officers Training Corps attending
colleges in Oklahoma and Texas will
be held at Camp Benning, Georgia.
