BASE BALL PRACTICE WELL.
UNDER WAY.
The first base ball practice was
held last week and about 30 men re
ported. Since then on afternoons
when there was no drill and on Sat
urdays regular practice has been kept
up to whip the men in shape for the
first series of games with Howard
Payne which is only a little over a
month off.
It is too early to guess just who
will represent the college on the dia
mond this year, but there are some
good men out and the places will be
fought for. The receiving end of the
battery is going to be well taken care
of in Dinan, Powell, and McMurray.
For pitchers there seems to be a
number of promising candidates in
Higginbotham, Shearer, Sholtz, Me-
Clintock, and Pearson. It is the in
field that our greatest strength at
present lies for here will be seen col
legiate circles—Priester on first and
Rigney at short. Other candidates
for the infield are Chapman, Baker,
Laekey, Lewis and Landa. For the
outfield Alexander, Fabian, Mahan,
Dwyer, Vaudervoort, and Wise are
trying out. There are several other
candidates besides these and still
others are expected to report latei'
on.
The war has again cut into our
chances of having a championship
team as it did last year. The mem
bers of the team are not to be ex
cused from drill this year. The only
practice they will be able to get will
be on Saturday and Sunday after
noons and on Tuesday’s and Thurs
day’s when class work does not inter
fere. This is the same handicap
last year’s team worked under when
the players had to drill the two hours
with the corps and then play a g;ame
afterwards against a fresh team.
RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT.
Whereas, it has come to the know

the needs of troubled souls and who
can bring blessing out of pain and
anguish. Be it further
Resolved that a copy of these res
olutions be sent to Mr. Copeland and
a copy furnished The Battalion for

Whereas God in his omniptence

MY PIPE.
You can have all the “makin’s”
With papers straw or white,
But let me have my good old pipe
And I will be all right!
•
Also take the “ready-rolled”
With cork or common tip,
But leave me my old jimmy pipe
And I won’t care a thrip!
And you can have the Turkish Blends
With all the pretty name,
But if you leave my pipe with me
Why, “we” will be the same!
And just the same with the “ladies”
brands,
That smell so very sweet,
For my “straight dope” to you would
be:
My pipe just can’t be beat!
Cigars will also fall to you,
No matter what their price,
For me and that old pipe o’ mine
Are gettin’ ’long right nice!
I don’t condemn these things at all
For you they are all right.
But if I’ve got that pipe of mine
I’ll smoke with you all night!
’Cause me and that old pipe o’ mine
Have glorious times a smoking,
When it starts to goin’ good.
Then I just start to “cokin”.
And in the smoke of every can
I get over there at Casey’s
I see a thousand different things.
And also several faces!

At nights I love to get right “comfy”
And lean back in my chair
And blow smoke rings and watch
them frame
Her face so sweet and fair!
And don’t that make it clear to you
Why it is no joke
Because I like to get my pipe
And smoke and smoke and smoke!
