THE BATTALION
3
THE FIRST ANNUAL
“PEP” RALLY.
On Thursday night of last week.
Runt Hansen, A. & M.’s all-southern
yell leader, conducted the most bril
liantly successful pep-fest ever held
at this school. The show started
about eight o’clock when the corps
assembled at the “Y” in every form
of dress and undress possible. There
were some men in evening dress and
some in night dress, some in blue suits
and some in union suits, some in boots
and some in slippers, and some in
unnamable—indescribable garbs com
mencing at the top with a stove-pipe
hat and ending at the bottom with a
hip boot on one foot and a boxing
glove on the other.
This motley gang led by the band
and in mob formation marched to
prominent alumni, who were present,
for speeches. Yells were given each
man as he finished.
The next thing on the program was
the burning of Johnnie “Garity Jr',
the offspring of our illustrious captain
of football. On the small shoulders
of this wicked jinx was placed the
blame for the awful catastrophe
which occurred in Houston and to a-
gain gain the favor of the gods he was
sacraficed at the stake. Johnie, as
usual, performed heroically, even as
sisting Abe Bull and Runt in the
greatest sacrafice possible, the desti
nation of his own chee-ild.
When there was naught left of the
evil omen but ashes, the “pep” began
to spread more rapidly until some
body kicked the can over and then the
racket that ascended into aerial re
gions made the moon shudder,
Kyle field where they were assembled
in column of fours on the new foot
ball ground. Here began the re
hearsal of the Friday snake dance
maneuvers which consisted in form
ing the corps four abreast in three
columns and then, after giving sev
eral yells, from formation shifting to
that of a gigantic “T.”
After this business was over the
bunch gathered in a great circle
around a fire on the baseball diamond.
As soon as some of the enthusiasm
had been checked so that he could be
heard. Runt called on several of the
the stars blink, and caused several
comets to change their course. How
ever, as much yelling was in store
for the morrow Runt put the lid on and
dispersed the gang! for the night.
Such then was) the first annual
“pep” rally, inaugurated by Runt
Hansen to precede each Texas—A.
& M. game. And it is our prediction
that if at each succeeding rally, the
“pep” is as plentiful as at the first,
the result of the game which follows
on the next day need never be in
doubt.

a big A. M. C. on the bleachers, and
every seat that was crossed by the
chalk mark was occupied by a cadet
in a white shirt. This was a great
success. It is the first time that
such a design has ever been shown
in a rooting section in Texas.
The success of our yelling is due
to the untiring efforts of our chief
yell leader, “Runt” Hanson, and his
assistants, Carl Tanner and “Kike”
Burkett. Old “Kike” Barraco was
among the distinguished alumni pres
ent, and he aided some in leading
yells.
After the game our president real
ized our condition, and excused us
from all classes for Saturday and an
nounced that minor regulations would
not be observed. Immediately about
three-fourths of the corps “beat it”
for Bryan. Some went on the street
cars, some rode the specials and
some walked. They paraded the
streets of Bryan singing and yelling.
After quite a bunch had gathered, a
bonfire was built on the main street.
Then came more yells and songs, and
wild dances. The manager of the
picture show threw the doors open to
the cadets, and in fact the cadets

were welcomed and congratulated on
every side. A couple of farm wagons
were found somewhere and tied on
behind autos, the boys piled in, at
least as many as could did, and rode
about the streets until the early hours
of morning. On every corner could
be found bunches of from four to
twenty cadets singing:
“Gone are the days when Texas had
a team;
Gone are the days when Varsity was
supreme;
Down in defeat, before the Farmers
bold.
We hear their rooters sadly moan
ing:
Take us home.

NEW NIGHT SERGEANT.
The military department as well as
other departments in school is steadily
increasing in size and efficiency. At
Ithe beginning of the year Sergeant
^Toward was added to the already high
ly efficient force, and within the last
week Retired U. S. Army Sergeant
“Mike” Malley has been added to the
Commandant’s well organized force of
discipline enforcers. Sergeant Malley
was formerly first sergeant of the 5th
Cavalry, U. S. A. His duty now is to
aid Sergeant Howard in preserving
the peace order and decorum between
the hours of ten p. m. and six a. m.
From the quietness that prevails over
the campus now between these hours,
when formerly one might hear all
kinds of noises, we say that the two
night sergeants are models of effi
ciency.
