Hang Around §' | 121 Campus Confectionery j S . ■» ■H- & "S* ^ Many struggling American artists are indebted to Countess Gladys Van derbilt Szecsenyi for timely help in distant lands. Perhaps no case bet ter illustrates her thoughtful and kindly spirit in aiding her compatriots than my own. After completing my studies with Prof. Hubay, on giving my debut concert, the Countess en listed the vital interest of all the members of the Ministry, diplomacy and aristocracy in the first American violinist to conertise in Budapest. Just as I was about to step upon the platform to open my program, her cable from London was handed to me, reading: “I am certain of your artistic suc cess. Allow me to assure the finan cial success with one thousand crowns.” Her absolute faith in my ability, coupled with the responsibility of be ing the pioneer for the American artist performing in Budapest, gave me such great stimulus that I sur passed myself beyond my wildest ex pectations that night. My interpre tations of the Hungarian and Slavic compositions in particular won great ovations from my elite audience, and it was that very occasion which de cided my chosen life work. The won derful possibilities for individual in terpretation in these powerful com positions make them a fascinating life study for me. The above incident is only one among many recorded to the Countess’ credit. Countess Szecsenyi has established a prestige in Hungary for the American woman that will be remembered long after the Vander bilt millions have ceased to cause a furore in the land of Magyars. HELEN WARE. THE GOLF LINKS. For several weeks past an epidemic fever has been spreading slowly, but ever increasingly, throughout the col lege. There is a peculiar charac teristic of the epidemic that individ ualizes it from any other, namely, that it has precipitated itself only on the instructorial staff and their ap pendages. The classical name for this malady is “golf;” but the pro vincial name is “cow-pasture pool.” Credit is to be given to the few members of the faculty who planned and put into existence in such short time this novel way to passing time that would otherwise be a burden. This aspect of the game does it no way give it justice. Its chief function is to some, pleasure, to a few, recrea tion, and to others, exercise. The links have been laid out under the personal supervision of a golf ex pert, and the excellent ones of Chi cago have been duplicated as nearly as possible in the college links. In some unique ways the course here outclasses the former. The many natural hazards and the remarkable speed of some of the greens make the score of each hole uncertain to the very brink of the cup. Prof. Chastain (placing his hand on Woody’s head)—I can tell by this boy’s bumps in what state he was born. Woody—In what state, professor? Prof. Chastain—In the state of ig norance. Mr. Bechert—Hemphill, what sort of tooth curves have involute gear teeth? Hemphill — Hyperbolical and para bolic, I think.
