BASKETBALL T’S AWARDED The Honor Is Conferred on Seven Men. Athletic Editor Makes Comment. At a meeting of the Athletic Council last week T’s were awarded to the fol lowing members of the basketball team: Nick Braumiller (captain), Gilfillan, Everett, Hansen, Burkett, Barnes, and Charlie Davis (manager). Every one of these men worked hard all the season and played good basket- Iball, and they certainly earned coveted T’s which were awarded them. Nick Braumiller, undoubtedly the best man on the team, played in every game and played hard. He kept the men’s spirits up and put that old pep and confidence into them, often mak ing a victory out of an apparent de feat. This is the third T Nick has won in basketball. Nick was given a place on the first all-State team by every judge, with one exception, and that judge placed him on the second team. Gilfillan, that Irishman from Ver mont, has more different ways of shooting a goal than any other forward ever seen here. Gilfillan only mist one game, due to a broken finger, but this broken finger did not keep him out of the Rice same, altho it was in bad shape and had not started to heal up. Gilfillan was mentioned by most of the judges as first choice for all-State forward. This is the second T for Gil fillan in basketball. “Pete” Everett, our all-State guard, is an example of what a man can do when ne wants to. Pete’s first at tempt at basketball was in the com pany league last year. He made the all-company team, and this year he went out for the “Varsity” team. He made it with Dying colors. Not a for ward in the State was too fast tor him, not even when he had a sprained ankle. “Runt” Hansen is an example of the triumph of brain over brawn. Not withstanding his diminutive size, Runt aHvays managed to fool his guard and shoot the goal. He kept a cool head, and when he got a shot his aim was unerring. Runt is a great beliver in trying again. He almost made his let ter last year, and he tried again this year and came back strong. It is said that Runt even has T’s stamped on his sox. Barnes is another example of per severance. Barnes tried out last year, but did not make the team. This year he worked harder than ever, and al tho he never got to play in the first few games, when he did get in he ably demonstrated his right to a T. “Kike” Burkett, the Galveston won der, had a hard job getting into the games at first, but once he was put in there wasn’t a doubt in anybody’s mind as , to his pep and ability.. “Kike” played a whirlwind game, both at guard and at forward and earned his T be yond a doubt. Last, but not least, comes our all- State manager, Charlie Davis. Charlie Davis showed himself to be an able financier, for he started with nothing and ended with a well cared for cham pionship basketball team and enough money to give them T mackinaws. This is the first time the basketball team has ever been given sweaters or mackinaws. On the trips the team al ways stopt at the best hotels and ate the best food money could buy. And Charlie financed it all, notwithstanding the high cost of living and the war in Europe. NICK BRAUMILLER RE-ELECTED BASKETBALL CAPTAIN. The basketball letter men had a meeting last Sunday and unanimously re-elected Nick Braumiller to lead them to the State championship next year. Nick is undoubtedly the best man for the place. Nick has every character istic that goes to make up not only a good basketball player, but also a leader of men. Nick has a large quantity of that undefinable thing call ed pep, and he not only has it himself, but he instills it into every man on the team. He is a natural-born bas ketball player. He has speed, strength and endurance, and he has had three years experience on a college team. Under his leadership and with the help of the old men who will be back A. and M. should win the State cham pionship. ' IN MEMOMRIAM.
