Itural and Mechanical College CAMPUS BETTERMENT IS MADE POSSIBLE BY LATE APPROPRIATIONS Emergency Measure Passed by Legis lature Insures Concrete Walks and Other Improvements. Announcement that the Legislature had allowed and that Governor Fergu son had approved the A. & M. College emergency appropriation request was cause for general rejoicing on the campus last week. The emergency measure carried with it funds for operating the steam plant and other college agencies, and in addition allowed something for im provements and repairs, a very neces sary item. Dr. Bizzell says that the work of constructing sidewalks, repairing and refurnishing the chapel, and other steps to improve the general appear ance of the campus, will be taken im mediately. A concrete walk, eight feet in width, will be laid from Gath- right to the chapel, and if sufficient funds remain other walks will be con structed. A good part of the sum al lowed for “outside improvements’’ will be expended in planting trees and flowers. COLLEGE Health at the A. & M. College is good. The report of Dr. Otto Ehlinger, college surgeon, is responsible for the statement that the percentage of men missing duty as a result of sickness is lower than the percentage in the United States army. And while much of this is due to the careful attention given cadets at the college hospital, there is but little sickness among the instructors and their families. The college hospital is manned by Dr. Ehlinger, a graduate physician and surgeon, and by two trained graduate nurses. Twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner, all of those who feel at all had or who are suffering from a wound, however slight, report to the hospital for examination and treat ment. The cost of this treatment is covered in the medical tee of $8 which is paid on entering. In the last five years there have been but six deaths at the college. One boy was drowned, another was killed by a train, another died as the result of being struck by falling glass, one died of appendicitis and two deaths were caused by meningitis, which was contracted by the boys during visits to their homes during the Christmas holidays. Epidemics of measles, mumps and other kindred diseases are forestalled by isolating the victims and by pre ventive measures.
