Church of Houston, of which Rev.
Peter Gray Sears, who recently ad-
drest the corps in Chapel, is rector.
It is an interesting experience for
a preacher to face a congregation com
posed for the most part of 900, young
men, bright, keen, clear-eyed, strong
and vigorous, bubbling over with vi
tality and energy, and alert to hear
what the preacher has to say to them.
And woe to the pfeacher if he does
not say it straight and say it quick!
They give him a fair chance; but
“business must proceed promptly.”
There is no patience with what they call
“reading the minutes of previous
meeings;” an imposition upon their
distinctly limited supply of patience
calls forth unmistakable reecognition

be altogether profitable to preachers
generally.
The, moral and religious life among
the Cadets at the College, so the Y. M.
C. A. secretary reports, was never
better than at present. There is a
fine spirit among them; and the moral
sentiment of the corps is distinctively
high. Certainly the Rector of Christ
Church found it so on the occasion of
his recent visit.
And this is true in spite o” 1 !
fact that the Legislature of the State
of Texas is bringing to bear upon
these Cadets about the most irrelig
ious influence they could be subject
ed to; and in this way, viz., by pro
viding a building, a so-called Chapel,
which stands for the outward and
visible expression of faith in religion,
which as a matter of simple fact is a
wretched, worn-out, old, tumbled-
down shack that has had to be bolted
and anchored together to keep it from
falling down; the building is hardly fit
for a decent horse-stable, much less
a house in which to offer up worship
to Almighty God.
