JUNIORS IN ATHLETICS.
By the process of weeding which
the present class has gone through
for three years, only the cream of the
class athletes are now represented in
our college athletics. These, as one
may notice in glancing over the mem
bers of the different teams, are in
deed few in number. “Daddy” True,
“Sot” Cawthon” and “Fatty” Persons
represent the better men on the foot
ball squad. Of these three only one
is left, “Sot” Cawthon. The “back to
the farm” fever caught “Daddy” and
Persons, and consequently they are
no more with us. Besides these three
men there were Washam, Williams,
Reynolds and DeLong. This quartet
are with us now and without a doubt
they will be wearing the college “T”
next year, as they showed exceptional
ly good form on the squad and in
games in which they were used as
substitutes.
As we go from the more important
form of athletics to the less import
ant, we can see that there is a like
decrease in athletic juniors.
Now, baseball, our next important
sport, has only eight of our class. It
is needless to say that these men are
good, because if they were not Coach
surely would not have them out on
the squad. As it is, only two of the
eight belong to the “T” Association,
W. J. Skeeler and “Red” Gillespie. In
Tom Cherry Coach has a very ef
ficient first baseman, and probably the
only one for the place. There is
Smitham with the noise in left field;
McCollum, utility man, and one that
can always be depended upon to de
liver a pinch hit; Red Warren, a sec
ond baseman of no bad reputation, and
L. J. Skeeler, a pitcher with smoke,
curves and “pep,” but just a bit weak
on control. It’s not a bad eight for
any baseball team.
On the track there are Captain Tur
ner and Guy Hudson. Turner, as
everyone knows, is a capable man on
the cinder path. His long suit is wind
and hence he takes part in the dis
tance races. Hudson, on account of
injuries, was not able to enter the
Dallas meet. However, he is “at him
self” again and surely will be heard
from.
Lastly, we have basketball, which
is practically a new form of athletics
here. One man represents the
Juniors, and he is no other than E.
N. Peters. Peters played a star game
while a sophomore and again this year
he showed his ability by consistent
and hard playing.
In conclusion, we may say, although
the Juniors are in the minority as to
numbers, they are there with the
tjoods, and next year they will be our
leaders in athletics as well as mili
tary. STANGEL.
WHAT IS RETREAT,
From the lack of patriotism which
is shown by some of the instructors
on the campus it seems as though
many, of them have no idea what re
treat should mean to every American
citizen. It is nothing uncommon to
see an instructor walking about the
campus while the band is playing
“The Star Spangled Banner” at re
treat. This is not very good adver
tisement for the school. It is a lack
of courtesy and a disrespect to the
institution which the party is serving.
Many people may be excused from
this ceremony, but there is no excuse
for a man who is capable of teaching
at a place of this kind. If you have
no respect for yourself, have some for
the Stars and Stripes.
Test of a Girl—If a girl thinks more
of her heels than of her head, depend
upon it, she will never amount tj
much; for brains which settle in the
shoes never get above them. Young
gentlemen will please take note of
this.
