Expulsion from college is one of the
greatest calamities that can come into
a man’s life. When the edict of ex
pulsion is made known to the unfor
tunate student he does not know what
to do; he does not want to go home
and face his father and dear mother
with such a thing hitched to his name.
He knows that when he faces his
father as an expelled student, right
then and there something is going to
happen. The bond between father and
son is greatly weakened. The father
looks his son in the eye—and such a
look as he will give him, so much as
to say, “The name that was given you
is now disgraced by your foolhardi
ness.” The mother must be taken into
consideration. She has set her son up
as an ideal and when this boy comes
home from college expelled, her hopes
for her boy’s future will be brought
to a much lower degree, and she will
be heart broken.
The acts for which nine-tenths of
college men are expelled for are done
in the spirit of fun. Among some of
these acts, the clipping of hair might
be mentioned. Hair clipping is one
subject that is discussed very much
on the first significance of the glorious
springtime. It is very amusing to see
a row of clipped heads in a section
room, even though it does cause their
owners some embarrassment; never
theless, practically every one who has
had the misfortune to lose his beauti
ful locks takes it good-naturedly. There
are some—well, we will say some—
who get “huffy” when their hair is
shorn off and proceed to take measures
against those who victimized them.
You who think that you have been
very much mistreated, why not call
the perpetrators’ hands one at a time
and have it out privately, instead of
causing humiliation to the “bad” ones’
parents? We nil know what the uni
versal opinion is of one who thinks
that he is “too good looking” to have
his hair clipped and takes measures in
retaliation for the “heinous” act.
At this time of the year the Fresh
man is apt to regard his time as a
“Fish” nearly ended and take more
liberties than are accorded him. He
has been at college long enough to
know the way of things thoroughly
and will naturally tend to assume the
air and manners of an “old boy,” and
in doing so he may go too far. Serve
your time as a true “Fish,” fellows; it
isn’t very much longer. After- all,
there are many joys peculiar only to
the Freshman, so do not hurry the
time away.
