THE LAYING OF THE CORNER
STONE OF
Goodwin Hall—Masons Officiate.
Last Saturday certainly was a day
of importance to us all, not so much
that all recitations had to been sus
pended but that we were given the
opportunity of^ attending the beauti
ful and impressive ceremonies con
nected with the laying of the corner
stone of Goodwin Hall. Work has
been pushed on the construction of
this new and handsome building and
the brick work to the beginning of
the second story was completed that
day, when with the usual rites of the
order of Masons, conducted by the lo
cal Masonic lodge of Bryan, the stone
of polished granite was set into place.
Promptly at 10:30 o’clock the corps
fell in the plot in front of the main
building, and throughout the morn
ing’s exercises militarism was strictly
observed. The band as usual was at
the head of the procession.
The several speeches made were
mostly for the benefit of the student
body.
As the corps was marched to the
assembly hall, the first address was the
address of welcome by President Har
rington. In the course of his speech
Dr. Tarrintgon pointed out the bene
fits of the institution to the people of
Texas and mentioned its probable fut
ure lines of development.
Hon. J. M. Green declared that
three dormitories should mave been
dedicated instead of one.
President Brooks of Baylor, vowed
ii thoughtful language his belief in
technical education and asserted thai
classical training should move in para-
lel lines without being inferior to the
other. He then spoke eloquently and
to the point on the conservatism of
college men. He applied the saying
that wherever you find a Greek, there
you find Greece to the universality of
the spirit of conservatism among col
lege men.
He showed how democracy permeat
ed all modern life especially applying
it to all college life, and called on
the young men to apply the principles
of democracy under the control of law
to every situation they found them
selves in the world. He gave a vivid
picture of democracy at work. Presi
dent Brooks’ address was unusually
strong and thoughtful, and met with
a well merited applause from the
audience when he finished.
At the building under the direction
of Worshipful Master Gibbs, Senior
Warden Saunders and Junior Warden
Dr. Raysor of the Brazos Union Lodge
No. 129 Ancient Free and Accepted
Masons of Bryan, the corner stone of
Goodwin hall was put into place with
the short masonic exercises. Dr. J.
D. West of Bryan led the devotional
exercises.
The following articles were placed
