; A TEN-VEARS* chase.
“persistency,*’ said the shoe
salesman to the beginner on the;
roa4, “is the most desirable <iual
ity a salesman can possess.
“I mean persistency when ap-:
plied with good common-sense.
Persistency, where the saUsUMrh
shows his teeth and growls out hia
request tor an order, is usually
greeted by a kick out of the door.
Persistency, backed by courtesy,
pleasant nature, good argument and
a desire to be of service to the
buy^-, win win every titue in the
end.: \ • jj
. “The oilier day I made a fah>
si/ed sale to a dealer 4 have called
on 4 very season for ten yea vs.
Every time I approached his town
I would say to myself: ‘What's t^ie
use of seeing Smith. 1 guess I will
pass him this time.* Bat somehow
I could not muster courage enough
to ignore him entirely, although
each arisit meant the loss of a half-
; day t» uUc | L ] .
“Smith greeted me pleasantly
each time, but he ; was wedded to a
certain make of shoe, and as an
apology for not giving me an order
said its manufacturer had always
treated him fairly and had even
helped him, afcd he saw no reason
why he should change.
“Hie was just the sort of a cus
tomer who. If treated ffcirly, sticks.
, “Last month I called on hiuj.
He did not seem so enthusiastic!
about his pet manufacturer, so I
managed to draw from him the
story of his grievance.
“It seems that the shoe manu
facturer had placed the manage
ment of his business in the hands
of his M>n, who introducad many
new rules especially offensive to
the old shoe dealers. Smith re
ported a shortage, and the son of
the manufacturer asked for evi
dence.
“Now, Smith was a great be
liever in the honesty of mankind.
He doubled no man’s word, he had
no idea any one would doubt his
own. So the 'misunderstanding
ended in Smith withdrawing his
trade from the manufacturer.
“I asked Smith why he had
made np his mind to give me his
trade without receiving quotations
from othfers, ^nd he said. “I have
admirek your persistency. While
all the other salesmen # b
since slopped calling on me. you
kept a-cotniug.’
“But it was not
alone which I won. by persistency.
I managed to secure a list of cus-
tomers-Of Smith's former manufac
turer, and I hustled around to see
them, j Nearly every one of them
had some sort of grievance with
the new management, and as a con
sequence was willing, to give my
goods a trial. A trial made them
steady customers.*—Saturday Ev
