WEDNESDAY, SEPT. *8. IS** -A. Rtxl! GREETING. opened for another m ‘nWr year of work. Most of the stu dents of last session are here again, and With them are many new comer*. The Battalion welcomes all. We trust that the Old Boys are glad to get back to College, and that tha ctraiigers will get nsed to things in a week or two. The Old Boys know that The Battalion belongs to the students, and must be supported by them. It is all right to talk About revenue from advertisements, but the sub script lops are the starting point. Every advertiser knows that ad vertising in a paper without a bona yi'firsubscription list is very nearly worthless. As our subscription list lengthens, we oan raise our adver tising rates: as we lose subscribers we must lower the rate. Every one should therefore come up promptly with his subscription. We are trying to get out a paper worthy of thej Agricultural THE ALUMNUS NUJhht R In preparing a letter to the meni- bers of the three clashes last gradu ated from the A.aiidM. For this reason we axe try ing to make The Battalion take the place of an Alumni Monthly. We hope that you graduates who have not yet written to ns will hasten to do So, if only .fen tell ns that the A. and M. College still has a place in yonr affections. ABOUT THE IKE ATMEM Of FRESH MEN Last year the Corps erf Cadets made a great step forward in a moral way, and through them the A. and M. j College gained in reputation throughout the State. This was largely accom- Mechanical with the hel can do so Uege of Texas, and the Students polished .by the abolition of haring by the upper classes. If we take part in having .this year, will we uot take a long btep backward? Ha/ing is no longer allowed at West Point and An- napotis. Why should we allow/it | at A. and M . supported jm it i by both the State and the National w< Government? Would it hot be well to give all the Freshmen an equal chaLee? all of them alone for a week or j|o. and then if aeny are seqn to be dangerously ‘'fresh'’ they can be attended to by the uppercjlassaanli.' The others shofnld be allowed to go jv I We are making art effort this year to issue a creditable newspa per, and also to develop material for future editorial staffs of the r Batmniw. Doubtless there is much undeveloped talent for writing *i| tbeir w . y in pA. c this College, and the only thing to , — do is to bring It to the surface. ] NOTICE TO AD' The courses belt are not calculat- , ed to encourage a taste/for literary , work, but plenty of opportunity is; iven for one to acquire a good The Battalion is the best adver tising medium through which to English style. With this fact in mind, we ask the cadets to interest themselves in work for The Battalion, with! the assurance that they will benefit themselves, even though Ibey ■ do not benefit the paper..
