A THLETICS
On May 8th A. and M.’s little track team
of eight men boarded the I. & G. N. for
Austin to take part in the intercollegiate
meet the next day, in which University of
Texas, A. and M. and Southwestern Uni
versity were the only schools represented.
Of course ’Varsitj^ had a “cinch,” her own
field and all her men, but A. and M. did
well, surprisingly well, and had ’Varsity
quite a little uneasy when Neff broke both
the discuss and the hammer records, and
they did not come up quite so well as they
had expected in the dashes, but in the long
run numbers told.
In the early part of the afternoon the
sun threw down a terrible, blistering heat
and everyone hunted shade, but there was
none. Soon a few light clouds covered
“old sol” and the afternoon became ideal.
The track was fast despite the sharp turns,
and no regard was had for state records.
A. and M. broke several, and track ath
letics deserves a little more favor, enthu
siasm and interest for the corps. The
team won 43 points or 5^4 points to the man
against 36 points with nine men of last
year. Yet the cadets did care if they never
got back.
Neff broke the discus record by several
feet, winning first, 108.8 feet. Alsotaking
first in shot, put 36 feet 6 inches, adding 6
inches to record; also third place in the
hammer throw.
Beilharz ran the 440 in 55 1-5 seconds,
against 57 seconds of 1902; second in 220
hurdles; third in 100-yard dash.
Weatherby first in standing broad, 9 feet
8 inches.
Hamner second in 100-yard dash; second
in 220-yard dash; second in running broad
jump.
Haltom second in half mile run; third in
one mile run; third in running broad jump.
Booth second in 440-yard dash.
Foster third in half im'le run.
The team won second place in the state,
the following men being on the team: Beil
harz, captain, Neff, Hamner, Weatherby,
Haltom, Foster, Booth, Simouds.
