THE BATTALION. 9 lend the “helping hand” in any emergency. Our students are men who have come here for a purpose, and that purpose to secure an education. We realize our duty to the Col lege and to ourselves, and have a determin ation to succeed. Such a purpose can be conducive to but one result. We desire to express appreciation of the kind sentiments of San Antonio Alumni and ,to assure them that we shall ever strive to merit their approval. San Antonio, Tex., 10-29, 1902. i Dr. David F. Houston, College Station, Texas, Dear Sir: 1 have been asked by the ex cadets at San Antonio to send a few lines to the College expressive of our satisfaction with the appearance of the corps of cadets while here, which you will please find en closed and trust that you will cause same to be read before the Battalion. Very respectfully yours, A. M. HILDEBRAND. San Antonio, Tex., 10-29, 1902. Dr. David F. Houston, College Station, Texas, Dear Sir: We, the graduates and ex cadets of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, residing at San Antonio, take pleasure in extending to you, and through you to the Faculty and Officers of the College, our hearty congratulations on the splendid and admirable showing made by the corps of cadets during their recent visit to San Antonio. Devoted as we are to our Alma Mater, we naturally take great pride in the material progress of this Institu tion, which stands for the uplifting and de velopment of the Texas youth morally, mentally and physically. It is our aspira tion and hope to see the A. & M. College elevated to its highest state of usefulness; and we have never felt a more abiding faith in its realization than we do now. You have our fullest confidence and in your efforts to raise the Agricultural and Mechan ical College of Texas to its highest possible standard, we pledge you our sincere and earnest support. To the corps of cadets we desire to say that we are more than proud of their manly bearing and gentlemanly behavior during their stay with us. We desire to particu larly impress upon the corps of cadets that the first requisite of a cadet of the A. & M. is to possess the quality of a gentleman, and to use it whether at College or away from it. They should remember that each cadet bears a responsibility toward the Col lege; that it must, in a large measure, be judged by the individual conduct and action of the cadet; that the power of either rais ing or lowering the dignity of this Institution ' rests wholly with the corps of cadets indi vidually and collectively. We feel assured that the corps of cadets are fully alive to their responsibilities, which they have dem onstrated by their excellent behavior and manly bearing while with us and for which we express our highest appreciation and gratitude. We heartily congratulate the coach and the entire football team of the College, and we sincerely trust that the victory so nearly won at San Antonio will be gained at . Austin on the'28th of November, which we stand ready to applaud. Very respectfully yours, (Signed.) A. M. HILDEBRAND. For the graduates and ex-cadets of San Antonio.
