    THE B 4 TT A LION,

It is with gratification that we can
say that our Commencement passed off
smoothly and successfully, without a
break. The programme, as Intended,
was strictly followed with the excep
tion of the sham battle, and everyone
was pleased at the result. There was
some regret expressed for the sham
battle, which was omitted on account,
of the visit of the United States in
spector, but the boys did not let that
dampen their ardor or interfere with
showing the visitors a nice time. Up
on the whole, we can congratulate
ourselves on the successful termination
of the session of ’99-’00.

With this issue of The Battalion we
close the current session. Our old
staff also close their books and throw
away the “blue” pencil which are taken
up by those who are to shape the des
tiny of our little college paper. These
men have an open field before them;
it contains many new and dangerous
grounds; but we sincerely hope they
will set their standard high, press
bravely forward and turn neither to
the right or to the left, and they will
surely reach the coveted goal. Do not
let lack of interest or discouragement
become your master, but in the face
of all these be a zealous worker, and
an unselfish man, and the crown of
success will surely fall to him to whom
credit is due. Those who we have se
lected to fulfill this great duty are ex
actly the men needed for the position,
and[ they are, without the slightest h'nt
to a doubt, the most interested, patri
otic and capable men which could have
been chosen. They seem to fully real
ize the great responsibility which rests
upon them, and knowing this and also-
knowing what is expected of them by
their fellow-schoolmates, only inspires
them with new spirit and arouses re
newed efforts to success,
Hal Elrod stands as the man who is
to fulfill this expected duty, and with
him goes Seth B, Holman as an unself
ish, ardent worker to the interest of
the college.
The students have shown their good
sense by electing these two young men
to these responsible positions and the
destiny of the paper is certainly in
good keeping so long as these two men
have control of it.

Boys, next year we intend to produce
a "Battalion, ,T which will be a “crack-
a-jack;” one which will be an honor
to the A. & M., and a credit to the
corps of cadets. But to do this we will
have to have the hearty co-operation
and assistance of this same corps.
You frequently hear complaints of our
lack of literary matter, and the blame
is heaped upon our heads (the staff of
editors), when, in fact, we are doing
everything in our power to give yon
something worth reading. This paper
is "for the cadets, by the cadets, and
of the cadets,” and unless you come
forward with contributions, and give
us your support, we can never hope to
attain to a high standard.
