He builds our cities and beautifies them.
He connects distant stations with cable
and with key; builds the houses that
shelter us, and the vehicles that haul
the produce of the land, and, with
coach and locomotive that he has con
structed, carries us safely to our destin
ation while we sleep. He constructs
the cradle in which infancy is rocked,
and the coffin m which the mortal
soul is laid to rest. He acts his part in
the far-flashing issues' of war. It was
he who built the faithful ships, and
operated their machinery, that sailed
into Manila Bay, carrying the American
flag, and by his hand were the guns
made that there emblazoned the name
of Dewey on history’s page.
The soldier—the blowd and pulse of
his government in war, the idol of the
earth in victory.
As I hasten, permit me to express
gratification at the splendid appear
ance and deportment of the Corps of
Cadets with us to-day, and to indulge
the hope that the people of Texas at
large, recognizing the service this fac
ulty is performing, and sympathizing
with the hopes and aspirations of her
young men for industrial education and
a desire to make better farmers, better
mechanics and better soldiers, will by
legislation enlarge the facilities: of this
institution until there shall be no one
turned from her door.
