    HORTICULTURAL...
URING this year the Depart
ment of Horticulture, Bot
any and Entomology was divided
into three departments. Prof.
Price had been recommending this
division of the department dur
ing the past seven years, so that
the work could expand and grow
more along special lines.
The last legislature passed a law
creating the office of state ento
mologist, whose duty it shall be,
among other things, to teach en
tomology in the A. and M. Col
lege. Prof. F. W. Mally, M. S.,
was elected to this position and
begins work in the college this
session. The Board separated
Entomology from Horticulture
and Botany and assigned it to
Prof. Mally. Afterwards the
Board separated Botany from
Horticulture and made a separate
department of this subject also.
Prof. H. Ness, M. S., was elected
to this department. This leaves
the subjects of Horticulture and
Mycology in one department and
these are now being taught by
Prof. Price and Prof. A. M. Fer
guson, M. S., who has been
elected assistant horticulturist.
Prof. Ferguson is a post-graduate
of the Horticultural department
of this college. He has taken
special work with Prof. T. V.
Munson and also spent two years
at the famous Shaw Botanical
Garden of St. Louis.
The new Agricultural and Hor
ticultural building that will soon
be commenced on the campus
will afford the Horticultural de
partment room—-much needed at
present—for expansion. There
will be seven large rooms assign
ed to this department for labora
tories, class rooms, offices, can
nery, evaporator, marmalade fac
tory, pickle factory and jelly fac
tory. In addition to these rooms
the Horticultural department will
have a half interest in a cold stor
age room, museum, library and
photographic room. Work is now
being planned to put in a modern
horticultural equipment to cost
$2000, which will consist of the
latest scientific apparatus for
instruction and experiment in
vegetable pathology, as well as
horticulture. A large green house
will be built for plant forcing,
sub-irrigation and study of plant
diseases. Arrangements will be
made to carry on horticultural
practice in the green house or
laboratory, irrespective of the
