President Roosevelt says that President McKinley and Presi
dent Francis of the World’s Fair told him that he heard Mayor
Wells and Chief of Detectives Desmond say that Isaac Tailor and
Director Skiff of the World’s Fair told him that Bob Fitzsimmons
heard that there was no doubt that the St. Louis Star and Director
White of the Department of Admissions said that Gov. Dockery
and Circuit Attorney Folk said that Sheriff Dieckmann and Judge
Jim Cronin had told Carrie Nation that Tony Faust and Chief of
Police Kiely had declared to Frank Hall, Manager of the Broken
Heart and Postmaster Wyman that it was generally believed that
Congressman Dick Bartholdt and Judge Douglas stated in plain
terms that they had heard Uncle Sam and Norris Gregg say that
their friend Sarah Bernhardt had said Joe Lynch, the manufacturer
of the only true whiskey, OLD LYNCH RYE, informed them at
the election that it is well known all over the country, especially
in the country towns, that Harry B. Hawes and Tom Wand had
caught Chief Swingley of the Fire Department in saying that in
his opinion it was a matter of fact and great public interest that
General Wood, the Director of the Philippine exhibit, had said
that Judge Bobby Carroll and the manager of the Broken Heart
saloon had told him that Jesse Burkett, “Our Jesse,” stated that
Sitting Bull had, in the presence of Jim Corbett, declared that the
amusement-going public of America supposed from what Senator
John P. Collins and Pat Short had told him that License Com
missioner Clifford and Harbor Commissioner Whyte had intimated
that the World’s Fair was the greatest thing that had ever hap
pened and was worth thousands of miles coming to see and al
though Pierpont Morgan had bought nearly the Atlantic Ocean,
there was one thing he could not buy and that was the World’s
Fair now in progress in St. Louis.
