THE BATTALION.

citizens of these United States, of which we are all so
proud, and take up the duties of life in earnest. Members
of the graduating- class, thus far you have stood bravely at
your post of duty. For the past nine months you have
g-uided the events of this Colleg-e with unsurpassed success,
and as you now g-o forth into the untried experiences of
another world, let your true motives, noble ambitions and
lofty aspirations ascend unto the skies and in the on-com
ing- years of life you will shine, not as ling-ering- stars, but
as the brig-htest stars in the constellation of true manhood.
Let devotion to God and respect for woman characterize
all of your actions.
Your intellects have been broadened by education and
your characters accordingly developed. The opportunities
which you have thus far neglected are forever lost and the
time is now at hand to take advantag-e of what you have
learned. However as we feel our inability to give you advice
we can only remind you of noble characters such as those
of Robert E. Lee, George Washington and Gladstone; take
them as your guide, honesty as your motto and your ef
forts will be successful.
Fellow classmates, as we now take up the responsi
bility that is to fall upon us by the departure of our senior
friends, we shall have various temptations to meet, but
may we meet them bravely, remembering that honesty is
the key to success.
Again, our senior friends, we bid you farewell, wishing
you a long and prosperous life, full of happiness and suc
cess; and may you ever associate with kind words and
pleasant thoughts the Junior Class of ’99.
