soon to leave us. In those grasps were expressed a volume of
unwritten and unspoken “explanation.” All punishments and
corrections were forgotten, and we wanted to thank him for
kindnesses, both in the way of correction and advice. At last
the train arrived, and as it pulled out there was heard a spirited
hurrah for Geo. T. Bartlett.
He was a thorough gentleman and never shirked what he
believed to be his duty, and as he goes forth today to face the

The State Oratorical Contest.
We arrived at Mexia about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April
14th, 1898, and were met at the depot by some of the students
and professors of Trinity university, who had carriages ready
and we were soon on our way to the university. It is situated
on a low hill, commanding a view of the surrounding country.
We reached Tehuacana about an hour after leaving Mexia, and
were taken to our respective lodgings. At 8 o’clock a banquet
was held in one of the society halls and toasts were delivered by
one of the delegates of each of the different schools. A very
pleasant evening was spent and all were highly entertained.
Friday morning a business meeting of the association was
held at which new officers were elected. The following gentle
men were elected: President, Mr. Ramsey of Trinity univer
sity; vice-president, Mr. Kyle, of A. & M. college; recording-
secretary, Mr. Steeres, of Fort Worth university; corresponding
secretary, Mr. Randell, of Austin college; treasurer, Mr. Ham
ilton, of Baylor university. The A. & M. college was chosen
as the place for the next annual meeting of the association.
The people of Tehuacana are the most hospitable people I ever
saw. Everything possible was provided for our pleasure. The
keys of the town were turned over to us.
