THE BATTALION.
Austin, the capitol, is delightfully situated on a range of
hills on the north hank of the Colorado river. Many fine
buildings are to be seen here; chief among them is the capi
tol, constructed of native red granite. The surrounding
scenery is highly picturesque, rendering it a pleasant resort
for the tourist.
San Antonio is an important commercial city, being the
oldest, and the scene of our desperate struggle. She occu
pies a most prominent position in our history.
Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, Sherman and Laredo are
other prominent cities. The Lone Star has at present over
6,000 miles of railroads threading their way over the vast
surface of the state, carrying merchandise and busy human
beings to all parts of the country.
There can be no doubt as to the future of the Lone Star.
Facts, solid and irrefutable, place her final destination second
to none. It is true that a few difficulties occasionally impede
our progress, but to an energetic people like the citizens of
Texas, this is merely a pleasure and renders victory more
glorious. '
First in this great constellation in point of size and wealth
of soil, among the first in commerce, population and manu
factures, she will occupy a position to be envied. Before a
century increases the luster of its rays, the brilliancy of the
Lone Star will shame the other members of this “wonder of
heavens” a^ daylight doth a lamp.

With charms like these young Cupid stills
Concoctions for a thousand ills.—Ex. *
