14 THE BATTALION. Austin, the capitol, is delightfully situated on a range of hills on the north hank of the Colorado river. Many fine buildings are to be seen here; chief among them is the capi tol, constructed of native red granite. The surrounding scenery is highly picturesque, rendering it a pleasant resort for the tourist. San Antonio is an important commercial city, being the oldest, and the scene of our desperate struggle. She occu pies a most prominent position in our history. Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, Sherman and Laredo are other prominent cities. The Lone Star has at present over 6,000 miles of railroads threading their way over the vast surface of the state, carrying merchandise and busy human beings to all parts of the country. There can be no doubt as to the future of the Lone Star. Facts, solid and irrefutable, place her final destination second to none. It is true that a few difficulties occasionally impede our progress, but to an energetic people like the citizens of Texas, this is merely a pleasure and renders victory more glorious. ' First in this great constellation in point of size and wealth of soil, among the first in commerce, population and manu factures, she will occupy a position to be envied. Before a century increases the luster of its rays, the brilliancy of the Lone Star will shame the other members of this “wonder of heavens” a^ daylight doth a lamp.
