Newspaper Page TextTHE BATTALION. LAGNIAPPE. AN INCIDENT. A college girl on an April day Watched a boy who came that way. He was handsome, tall and debonnaire, With a curl of brown on his forehead fair. “I wonder if I dare speak,” thought she, “When I get behind that China tree.” Beneath her cap there glowed the wealth Of hard-earned knowledge and perfect health. The glad look died and a vague unrest To break one rule did she confess; A wish that she hardly dared to say— To speak to the boy who came that way. The boy came calmly down the street, Whistling the tune of an old “Liehlied.” He gathered courage and stopped in the shade Of the China tree to greet the maid. She blushed as he calld her, looking up To see if the teacher’s window was shut. “O yes,” said the boy from C. H. A., “She closed the window and went away.” He stopped and talked, but not of trees, Or singing birds or humming bees; They talked of picnic, hop and ball; Commencement, when they’d enjoy it all. And the girl forgot the rules of school, The teachers, all, e’en the corner stool, JL
