    8 THE BATTALION.
but little. Gonzalo tries to cheer him, showing himself a
true, stauuch friend.
Finally they all go to sleep except Sebastian and Antoni 0
who make a plot to kill Alonso so that Sebastian may succeed
him on the throne of Naples as Antonio succeeded to the
Dukedom of Milan by disposing of Prospero.
This plan does not go into execution, however, for Ariel
wakes up Gonzalo and Antonio just in time to save their lives.
Two other of the King’s followers, Triculo and Stefano,
meet the vile Caliban and with his aid form a plot to kill
Prospero and take possession of the island.
They both become drunk, however, and Prospero throws
them into confusion and gets them completely under his
power.
It is his object to make the men who have done him so
much injury truly repentant, and to see his daughter married
to young Ferdinand.
This is accomplished by getting them completely in his
power by means of his art, and then by showing them kind
ness.
In the last scene Prospero makes himself known to Alonso
and secures his return to Milan. This done, he reveals
Ferdinand, whom Alonso supposed to be drowned, playing
chess with Miranda within the cell. The joy of Prospero is
complete; Alonso is delighted to find his son; and Gonzalo,.
loyal old courtier, rejoices in the joy of those in whose ser
vices his life has been spent.
The Master, boatswain, and crew now come on the scene
and declare that the ship is floating just off the island and in
better trim than before the storm. This was done, of course,
by the “ dainty spirit” Ariel.
The whole party spend the night in Prospero’s cell where
he tells them the story of his life on the island. Before de
parting next day Prospero breaks his staff and drowns hie
books, relying solely on his own strength for the future.
