Shakespeare has portrayed many beautiful, lovable female characters but it is my opinion he never pictured one who possessed so truly the purity, virtue, simplicity, beauty and sweetness of character that ch-iracterize Miranda. In all of Shakespeare’s works we find a female heroine of the purest type, and in the Tempest we find Miranda the only female character, and in her the real beauty of the play. The different scenes of the Tempest are most diverse in character; in one the storm and fury of the winds and waters and the wreck and fight for life by the King’s company and mariners, in another the mutinous conduct and bloody threat ening by some of the King’s company, in another the beastly passion of the drunkards and slaves.
