Mr. President, members of the societies, ladies and gentlemen:
Perhaps it would not be counted seemly in one still in
the flush of early youth to ofler advice or even presume to
give instruction to others scarcely less youthful than himself,
for it has been bui a few brief years since I, as a student of
this institution, wore that cherished uniform of cadet gray
and took part in the forensic battles waged with such vigor in
your society halls. Still, I may be permitted, at this time,
to consider the attitude of a young man just entering upon
the responsibilities of a broader life, to note his hopes and
fears, his prospects and ambitions, and find inspiration for
myself, and those whom I have the honor to address, in the
