Our present pursuits as well as ideas reflect the advance in knowledge and improve ment in methods which have in the present century, almost revolutionized the civilized world. This is an age of invention, of progress, of utility, and the demand is for men whose train ing has qualified them to not only keep pace with the forward movement in applied science, but to lead and direct—to open new avenues for human energy. It became apparent years ago that an education in the older colleges in which the curri cula were largely composed of the classics, philosophy and abstract science, did not equip a young man with the proper information to enable him to design and direct the great works being undertaken, and that these positions were being tilled by men whose limited educations had been supplemented by intelligent practice in the machine shop and the field of construction. To provide for the demand there have been founded in all parts of the country technical institutions in which it is the intention to educate the mind, the hand at the same time.
