—AGGIES—
(Continued from Page 1)
Not much is known about Arkansas
but the Hogs must meet Texas,
T.C.U. and A. & M. on Texas fields
and are not likely to come out at
the top. Nor does the Baylor punch
loom as sharp as that of Texas,
Rice, SSM.U,, T.C.U. or A.&M.
That leaves Texas, Rice, S.
M.U, T.C.U., and the Aggies
with excellent prospects for the
title. Each has plenty of mat-
erial and plenty of experience.
Texas, with Bobby Layne, has
the only proven “Hot-Shot”
team, and the return to the
Steers of all-American end Hu-
bert Bechtol sharpened that
combination. Whichever other
conference team uncovers that
“spark-plug” type back and a
clicking combination will have
the manpower and material to
emerge as champion.
Rice has the best schedule,
playing S.M.U., Baylor, Texas,
and T.C.U. at home and Ark-
ansas on a neutral field at
Little Rock. The Owls play on
en enemy field only once, at
Kyle Field. Arkansas perhaps
has the toughest conference
schedule and there is little to
chose between the others. That
home schedule might prove the
difference if Rice is up among
the leaders.
So there they are. Texas by itself
in the top seat. The Aggies S.M.U.,
Rice and T.C.U. are next in line,
any one or more of them with
enough football talent to sweep
thru the league if the right com-
bination developes. 1946 promises
to be a dog-eat-dog season, most
experts predicting that every team
will be beaten at least once. There
will be no weak sisters and no
breathing spells. It will be perhaps
mid-season before most of the
teams take final shape. By Novem-
ber it is safe to say the conference
will have more fine teams than in
any year in its history.
The Aggies open at home against
North Texas Teachers, then jour-
ney to San Antonio to meet Texas
Tech. Oklahoma at Norman and
L.S.U. at Baton Rouge follow. By
that time you can tell more about
how the Aggies stack.
