the service and owns and operates
his own business known as the

from overseas and getting mail at

David C. Fransen has been ap-
= pointed chief scout of the Corpus
Christi division of the Humble Oil
and Refining Company, Mr. Fran-
sen recently returned to the Hum-
ble company after a period of mi-
litary service extending from Feb.,
1842, to Sept., 15, of this year. As
a captain in the Infantry he served
as a company commander in the
Asiatic and Pacific area and is the
holder of the purple heart and the
presidential unit citation.
Mr. Fransen joined the Humble
shortly after
uation and worked i in the West
+ Texas and New Mexico fields. In
January, 1937, he was transferred
to the geologic, lease and scouting
in that
department until called to military

Silver Taps: Lt. Olen W. Abbott.
Col. Kyle Riddle was a campus
visitor in January but will soon re-
turn to Europe. He has been in the
Air Corps since graduating from
A. & M. One of his exploits during
the action over France put him in
a tighter spot that he ever ex-
perienced when he was a star
“southpaw” of the Aggie baseball
team. He was forced to make a
belly landing in France when his
plane was shot down while on a
strafing mission. He was taken
in tow by members of the French|-
Underground and, several weeks
later was delivered back safe and
sound to the Allied lines. “I got
all the walking and bicycle riding
I wanted” was his only comment
as to how he got out.
A younger brother Rolean Rid-
dle, 39, is taking graduate work
at A&M and on the side, coaching
the A. & M. Consolidated High-
school football and basketball
teams,
Capt. Ernest V. Walton has been
released from the Navy Air Corps
after three years service in the
Atlantic and Caribbean. He and
his wife and three children will live
at College Station,, where Capt.

Rev. James P, Higginbotham is
pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church of Winters, Texas.
Lt. Robert S. Taylor is on termi-
nal leave following his return from
23 months in the ETO. He served
as Radio Officer for the Supreme
Hdgs., AEF and also far the 6th
Arm’d Gp. He and his family are
living for the present at 1616 Ur-
suline Avenue, Bryan, Texas,|,
where Mrs. Taylor has been making
her home while the Lt. has been
overseas. He is a brother of Willi-|p
am M. “Bill” Taylor, Jr., ’38, who
was killed in Sept., 1944, when the
prison ship in which he was being
transported was sunk.
Pete Dowling has returned to
Houston after three years in the
Navy and has been named Assist-
ant Coach and Physical Education
Instructor of Stephen F. Austin
High School. He was a member of
Houston School’s coaching
staff when he entered the Navy.
He will serve as line coach in foot-
ball and as head basketball coach
next winter. Pete played football,
basketball and baseball at A. &
M., although a broken leg stopped
his football career early. He was
a real star in baseball and played
professional baseball until a shoul-
der injury cut that career short.
His home is at 1273 Morris, Hous-
ton 9, Texas.
Woody Bell has been released
from active duty after 4% years.
Most of that time was in the Air
Transport Command. He is getting
mail at Box 315, New Braun-
fels, and is uncertain as to whether
or not he will return to profession-
al baseball in which he was en-
gaged before going on active duty.
Aggies of his day will recall with
a_ thrill his famous championship
ninth inning homer at Kyle Field
against Texas in 1938.

S. Advance Base Section Dry Dock
-1 Philip Medellin, has received
his discharge from the Navy. Be-
fore entering service, he was em-
ployed in the U. S. Customs Office
at Laredo. Mrs. Medellin, the form-|
er Miss Louise Henry, has been
making her home in Bryan while
Mr. Medellin has been in the serv-
ice.
While on terminal leave, Cla-
rence H. Heinen, has been promo-
ted to the rank of Lt. Col. Col.
Heinen, at present is at the home of
his parents, 4537 Munger Ave., Dal-
las, served in the Pacific was Area
and in occupied: Japan for nearly
two years.
Albert A. Maberry retired from
the service with the rank of Cap-
tain and is working with his broth-
er on the Flying M. Ranch, Star
Route A, Box 65, Austin, Texas.
John R. C. McGowen was promo-
ted in December to the rank of
Captain and is on terminal leave.

Capt. Hubert E. Braunig, Jr.
3508 Mosley Drive, Apt. 7, Hous-
ton, Texas, will return to the Col-
lege for a refresher course in
February. He returned to the states
in October and is now on terminal
leave.
James W. Criswell, 706% E. 20th,
Austin, Texas, was released from
service in October after 3% years
of service. He was a B-24 pilot for
15 months in the Pacific. He plans
to return to College to complete
work for a degree. Robert
W. Crook has returned from over-
seas service and is at home in Fort

his discharge on December 8 and

Major Jesse K. Barton, Box 57,
Rockwood, Texas, was a recent visi-

the States from the Philippines
in December after 23 months of

Lt. E. H. Levy, home address 4346 Nor-

January and hopes to be back in school
before the year is ove, He was a roommate
of the late Lt. C. “Chick” Korth, ’41,
whose substantial “nl to the College
was announced in a recent issue of the
TEXAS AGGIE. Korth was killed when his
plane was shot down near Belgrade in
April, 1944. Hiss will bequethed his entire
estate to the College to be used as a Loar
Fund. Ivey recalled with pleasure his
friendship with Korth and many details
of their experiences together while stu-
dents. ‘“The bequest,” declared Ivey, ‘is
just the kind of thing that Chick would
do. He was a great guy and a sincere
and wll loved friend of all that knew
im.’ -
Capt. Philip B. Curd has returned from
overseas duty with the 70th Divisien and
is now on terminal leave. He and Mrs.
Curd are living at 504 W. 28th., St, Bryan,
eras,
S. Urdaneta, Bella Vista 160, Mara-
ans Venezuela, spent several weeks on
the eampus in January. He operates ex-
tensive dairy and farming intersts in
Venezuela but manages a visit to the
States once a year if possible. He was
accompanied on his trip by Mrs. Urdaneta
and their son. While at A. & M. he took
some intensive graduate work in the ar-
tificial insemination of cattle. He reports
having a visit last fall with Ambassador
Kyle at Guatemala. Mr. Urdaneta sends
regards to all his A. & M. friends and
classmates.
Walter L. Hendon spent 43 months in
the Pacific but is a ‘‘Mister” again and
living at Richland, Texas.

Wendell Fields, Jr., is back from the

Houston 4, Texas. He is at the Brooke
General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, re-
covering from a minor operation at the
present. . . . Capt. James R. Sterling
spent 28 months with the 1st Cav. Div.
in Australia and Japan. He is back at
Conway, Texas, now.
After three years in the Panama Canal
territory, Capt. Clarence M. Cunningham
is out of the service and living at Pan-
handle, Texas. . . . Jere A. Daniel, Jr.,
spent 22 months in the ETO and is now
at Kerens, Texas, taking life easy.
Lt. Harold E. Barnes returned from 14
months overseas service with the Air Medal
with three clusters, ETO Ribbon with four
battle stars, the Victory Ribbon and the
American Theatre Ribbon. He gets his

months in the Southwest Pacific with the

wounded off Okinawa, May 4, 1945, re-
ceiving a head wound when four Jap sui-
cide planes attacked and sank his ship.
After four months of hospitalization he
returned to duty and is now getting mail

Texas. They are also the proud parents of
a daughter, Jimmie Kay, born Nov. 21.
This was the happiest Christmas that
Lt, Arthur A. Marston spent in a long
time—he completed a 4000 mile journey and
arrived at his home at 3101 Agnes St.,
Corpus Christi in time for the holidays.

Dr. Sam Law, 2804 E. 5th, Aus-
tin, is practicing Veterinary Medi-
cine at Austin. He was recently
elected Secretary-Treasurer of the
Capital City A. & M, Club.
William Paul Martin, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Paul Martin, 24,
of Decatur, began his story in a
prison camp in East Prussia in
1944, by jotting down favorite
poems, thoughts, prayers, and spe-
cial brands of humor of his pri-
onmates. Paul is back in A. & M.
and his book is ready for publi-
cation. The unusual thing about
this book is that it already has
800 ready-made sales even before
it goes to press. There are that
many U. S. servicemen who back
in a prisoner-of-war camp in Keif-
hyde, Germany, wrote their names
and addresses on carefully guarded
slips of paper so they might have
‘la copy if ever “their book” was
published. Each man will have his
own copy. Paul is the nephew of
Miss Mary Bell Ball, Bryan, Tex-
as, and is making his home with
her while completing his college
work.

tial Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific
campaign ribbon with five battle
stars, American Theater ribbon,
Good Couduct Medal and the Vic-
tory Medal. 1948
