STEW- ART’S new address is Box 39, Ingleside, Texas. He was former- ly at Ravenna, Ohio. ... LT. HER- MAN TOEPPERWEIN, USN, Menard, former attorney for the Federal Land Bank at Houston, is in Hawaii and attended the Texas Day celebration there. Ed. Kilman, HOUSTON POST colum- nist, recently carried the follow- ing remarks Re. Toepperwein in his “Texas Heartbeat”: “Just be- fore embarking at San Francisco, our old chum, Lt. Herman Toep- perwein, former attorney for the Federal Land bank here, wrote us, ‘Now watch the war in the Pacific go to town.” After a few weeks we began to worry about him. He had had ample time to reach the combat zone, yet the Japs were still resisting. Had Herman met with foul play en voyage? Finally his sister, Mrs. William Morrow, received a let- ter from Lt. Toepperwein, saying he had arrived safelv in Hawaii. He said he’d attended the Texas Day celebration there, and had a chat with their distinguished cousin, Adm. Chester W. Nimitz. “I saw a picture of the Texas Day party in the paper,” said Mrs. Morrow, “and was trying to find Herman in it—until I noticed in the caption that they served beer. Then I quit looking, because I figured he was under the table.” But that’s just the way they kid each other. She didn’t mean it. Fact is, Herman never drank a bottle of beer in his life unless he was with someone—or alone. Be- sides, any naval officer who would let weak beer put him under the table would be drummed out of the “Navy in disgrace; probably even made to walk the plank.” 1930 J. A.
