Lt. Col. John J. Gates
Recently promoted to lieutenant colonel,
JOHN J. GATES, whose home is at 2512
Prospect, Houston, is serving in the
Intelligence section of Lt. General Milliard
F. Harmon’s U. S. Army Headquarters in
the South Pacific. He was a cost ac-
countant for the Continental Oil Company,
Houston, before going on active duty with
the Army in 1941.

CHARLES REID has been named coun-
ty agent for Donley County, effective Dec.
1. He had been associated with the Farm
Security Administration and farming for
the past seven years. He succeeds H. M.
BREEDLOVE, ’34, county agent there for
the past nine years who recently resigned

LIEUT. JOHN R. ROUNTREE recently
graduated from the Army Air Forces
Navigation School at San Marcos, and has
been assigned to the school as an instructor

Lt. R. E. “Bud” Nolan at last report
was on maneuvers somewhere in Louisiana,
his last station being Camp Howze. He
was Assistant County Agent of Dallas
County before volunteering for the army
in November, 1942. He received his com-
mission in June 1943. Mrs. Nolan is living
at 717 West Pofford, Fort Worth.

recently promoted to lieutenant colonel.
He is commanding the 136th AAA at

MAJOR MEREDITH B. KENDRICK,
whose home is at 1809 Crockett St., Ama-
rillo, was recently promoted to the rank
of major. Before entering the armed forces,
e was with Montgomery-Ward in Fort
Worth. He is now asst. adjutant general
on Lt. Gen. Millard F. Harmon’s staff,
APO 502. He received his majority in
September.
CAPT. LOUIS A. KACZMAREK ar-
rived on the campus Dec. 21 to report for
duty with the A. & M. ASTP Unit. Capt.
Kaczmarek was injured at Camp Robin-
son, Ark., in Feb. and spent 7 months
in the Kennedy Gen. Hosp. at Memphis,
Tenn. Upon being dismissed from the
Hosp. he reported to Camp Fannin for a
stay of only 2 weeks before being assigned
to College Station.

LT. COL. JAMES A. MULLER is serving
as asst. anti-aircraft officer on the staff
of Lt. Gen. M. F. Harmon’s Army Haars.
in the South Pacific. His Houston residence
address is 2110 Bissonnet Ave. In civilian
life, he was a chemical engineer.

CAPT. WINSTON LORENZ was among
the Aggies who attended the Aelutian
showing of WNBL and the bull session

lowing a nervous breakdown in March,
SGT. JOHN H. SHOWS is now grounded
and doing office work in Tech. Inspection

Y., is a prisoner of war, having been cap-
tured when his plane was shot down in a
raid over Germany on August 17. Accord-
ing to news sent by Mrs. Fama Smith,

her that he is all right and in good
health.
CAPTAIN W. R. BUFORD lives at 3620
Balch, Fresno, Calif. He is second in com-
mand of the Sign. Bn.
MAJOR EDWIN L. HAMILTON, USMC,
has been wounded in action, but no details
are available.
MAJOR WOOD B. KYLE, USMC,
emerged uninjured from the thick of the
Tarawa conquest in the Pacific. Mrs.
Kyle and their year-old daughter, whom
Major Kyle has rot yet seen, live at 1915
Kalorama Rd., N. W., Washington, D. C.
Major Kyle was decorated with the Silver
Star and Purple Heart following action
on Guadalcanal. He is a nephew of Dean
E. J. Kyle. 1937

magne). He says he is spending his time
“working in the garden, studying Span-
ish, and the future”. He reports that LTS.
ROY L. CHAPPELL, ’41, and EDWARD
G. BATTE, ’42, are with him. He was in
the Parachute Troops and saw action in
both North Africa and Sicily. He was
wounded when captured, but has written
that he was not seriously injured. Rum-
ors apparently start even in a prison
camp in Germany, since his recent post
card the inquiry: “Is it true that A. and
M. is co-ed?” He lived at Raymondville
before going on active duty in 1940. .

MAJOR MELVIN M. LAWSON of the
Signal Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G.
Lawson of Cisco, has been awarded the
Legion of Merit by General MacArthur
for successfully directly the construction
of a pole telephone line in a remarkably
short time in New Guinea. He joined the
Army in 1941, and received his majority
in October. , . . N. RAY CLARK was
1ecently promoted to major at the young
age of 25. He was associated with the
Gerieral Electric Company in Pittsfield,
Mas:., when called to active duty and ED
ALLEN, ’27, says ‘““we hope to have him
back with us at General Electric when
the lights go on again.” Major Clark
has been overseas 14 months, and in the

on th Island of Tarawa aftr th first day’s

During the summers of 1940 and 1941 he
trained at San Diego, and was one of
eight officers chosen to be instructors for
the first class of Negro Marines to be
given training at New River, N. C. Later
he took tank warfare training at Ft.
Knox, Ky. His action on Tarawa was his
first battle, but his score of 300 dead
Japs shows he has learned his lessons in
training right well . The Distinguished
Flying Cross was awarded to LT. ROY
G. MARTIN, Cotuula, for his participation
in the raid over the Ploesti Oil Fields,
Rumania last August. He is now listed as

Winbern, Houston, celebrated Armistice
day by shooting down two of the Luft-
waffe’s best during the great doy-light
raid on Muenster, headquarters of the
Eighth Air Force recently revealed. Ma-
Duncan is executive officer of a
Thunderbolt fighter group now operating
in the European theater, and is a veteran
at knocking down enemy craft, now having
four to his credit. Training at Kelly
Field, he served as an instructor there
and later was sent to the Panama Canal
Zone.
CAPT. LOWELL E. THOMPSON, Sagi-
naw, attached to the 45th Division, has
been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry
in action during the Sicilian campaign.
The action came during a fierce enemy
engagement, when he personally adjusted
smoke screens to cover trapped infantry
