py TEXAS VETERINARIANS HONOR DR. MARSTELLER, NAMING HIM HON. PRESIDENT TEXAS ASN. Dr. R. P. Marsteller, dean of the school of veterinary medicine at Texas A. & M. College, was elected honorary president of the State Veterinary Medical Association of Texas at the semi-annual session of that organization held in Hous- ton Thursday and Friday last week. The organization was founded in 1901 by the late Dr. Mark Francis, who served Texas A. & M. College from 1888 until his death in 1936. He was dean of the school of veterinary medicine from 1916. Dr. Marsteller is a past president of the veterinarians. Graduates of Texas A. & M. College school of veterinary medi- cine, who will serve as officers for the coming year include: Dr. Sam E. Bunton, ’33, Del Rio, first vice president; and Dr. M. B. Starnes, 27, Dallas, corresponding secre- tary. Dr. Bunton received a B. S. degree in agriculture in 1929 and a doctor of veterinary medicine in 1933. Dr. Starnes, now a member of the board of health, Dallas, re- ceived his doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1927. “s a Members of the teaching staff of the school of veterinary medi- cine who spoke during the two- day session in Houston included: Dr. Fred P. Jaggi, '24, head of the department of veterinary hygiene; and Dr. H. L. Van Volkenberg, head of the department of parasi- | tology. Beaumont Honors Touchdown Twins Charles L. Babcock, ’18, and Charles H. Weinbaum, honorary member of the Beaumont A. & M. Club and of the A. & M. Ex- Students’ Association, were recent- ly honored by being chosen as one of the 10 outstanding citizens of Beaumont for the year 1937. The award was made by the Beaumont Citizen Press. Frank L. “Rabbi” Bertschler, ’21, was similarly hon- ored in 1936. Charles E. Babcock is vice presi- dent of the Association and an ac- tive member of the Beaumont A. & M. Club. As chairman of the Beaumont High School Athletic Council, he has taken the lead in athletic matters and has been par- ticularly active in the highly pub- licized argument between the high schools of Beaumont and Port Ar- thur. He is in the insurance busi- ness in Beaumont and is owner ‘and manager of the firm of C. L. Babcock and Company, general in- surance agents. Babcock and Weinbaum are known to Beaumont business friends as the “Touchdown Twins” in connection with their fine work along civic lines. “W. D. “Bill” McCabe, '26, recent- ly returned from Los Angeles to San Antonio to become manager of radio station KABC. He has been in the radio business in Los Angeles for several years. Mitchell H. “Reveille” Brown, ’16, is living at Rockwall, Texas. James E. “Baldy” Pirie, ’04, resi- dent engineer, State Highway De- partment, Paris, was among the winners in a recent non-profession- al photographers contest staged by the Dallas News. Mr. and Mrs. Ervin H. Astin, 99, Bryan, for the past six weeks have been enjoying an extended tour of South America. Mr. Astin is president of the City National Bank of Bryan and has other ex- tensive business and farming in- terests. Joe E. Dillon, ’33, is engineer on the construction of a million dol- lar library for the University of Virginia and is with the construc- tion firm of Doyle & Russell, of Richmond, Virginia. His present address is Box 1326, University Station, Charlottesville, Virginia. In a recent letter, Dillon reports that he was married last May to Lois Olmsted, of Norfolk, Virginia. J. G. “Bull” Floyd, ’30, is with the Bridgeport Machine Company, Box 889, Corpus Christi. “Bull” was captain of the Aggie football team in his senior year. Thomas H. Wallace, ’28, is sup- erintendent of drilling operations for the Gulf Oil Company in South- ern England. His address is 3 London Wall Building, ¢/o Lubri- cating & Fuel Oils, Ltd.,, London, England. E. C. 2. He is one of the youngest men in the history of the Gulf Company to be advanced to so important a position at his age. Hubert G. Willis R. Bodine, ’26, is teaching physical education at Corpus Christi Junior College at Corpus Christi, Texas. Gene F. Blake, ’37, is a brake- man for the Southern Pacific Rail- road Company with headquarters at Ennis, Texas. Robert L. Pou, Jr., ’37, is a cot- ton broker with Woods and Thor- burn, Dallas, Texas. George Becker, Jr., '37, is in the office of the Production Credit As- sociation at Houston, Texas. Jack C. Jeffrey, ’32, is a chemist in the Research Department of the Sinclair Oil Refinery and is living at 1639 La Porte Avenue, Whiting, Indiana. W. R. Barbeck, ’30, is with B. Segall Company, air conditioning and heating company, at Tyler, Texas. His address is 428 S. Broad- way of that city. Harry L. Fischer, '32, gets his mail at Box 668, Farmington, New Mexico. Harry is an engineer on the Navajo Project that is being carried on by the Soil Conserva- tion Service. Brooks W. Rogers, ’36, is with the State Highway Department at Mathis, Texas. C. “Abe” Bull, ’16, well known Austin businessman, was recently elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Austin Cham- ber of Commerce for 1938. S. J. Treadaway, '07, has been appointed district engineer for the State Highway Department at Abi- lene, going to that post from his former position as resident en- gineer for the State Highway De- partment at Terrell. He has been closely connected with the program of highway construction in the Southwest for many years. W. A. “Bill” French, ’13, recent- ly resigned his position as division engineer for the State Highway Department at Abilene to engage in private business in that city. His address is P. O. Box 394, Abi- lene. His oldest son, W. A. French, Jr., will receive his degree from A. & M. this spring. James W. Francis, 18, is presi- dent of the Motor Equipment Cor- poration, 626-28 North Main Ave- nue, San Antonio. The company handles contractors’ equipment of all kinds, specializing in Marion shovels, cranes, draglines, Diamond T trucks, McLanahan & Stone crushers, screens, dryers, and Hu- ber rollers. A. & M. men acquainted with the high spots in the col- lege’s student musical circles of the past 20 years, are moan- ing over the presence in the University of Texas’ band of a younger brother of Sol Bart- let, 24, and Willie Bartlet, ’29. Young Longhorn Bartlett plays a trombone as did older brother Sol, who was perhaps the most famous individual A. & M. band member in the history of that organization. He is at the present time with the Texas Company and lives at 2706 As- bury Ave., Evanston, Ill. Z. W. Bartlett, Jr., ’29, all-conference football player and Aggie grid captain during ‘his student days, is superintendent of one of the Freeport Sulphur Com- pany’s mines at Freeport. One cf the high spots in Sol’s mu- sical career at A. & M. came one afternoon when the Aggie band was playing at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show, when his trombone solo was encored 17 times, completely upsetting the afternoon musical pro- gram. Blodgett, ’37, is lieu- tenant with the 9th Infantry Reg- iment at Fort Sam Houston. Blod- gett says he has just finished two months of maneuvers, testing out the new proposed. streamlined in- fantry division, and that he found it very interesting. Rex R. Baugh, ’37, is teaching vocational agriculture at Rogers, Texas. Wallace T. Davis, ’30, is princi- pal of the elementary school at Malakoff, Texas. Edwin D. Luke, ’37, is a graduate | home at 128 East Adams, Alkam- | MARTY KAROW TO SUGGEED SIKES Marty Karow, former All-Ameri- can halfback at Ohio State, and more recently assistant football coach and varsity baseball coach at the U. S. Naval Academy, has been signed by the Athletic De- partment at A. & M. to replace “Siki” Sikes, who recently went to Georgia University. Karow will re- port immediately and will assist in spring football practice. He will also coach the Aggie baseball team this spring. Karow is well known in Texas having served as varsity backfield | coach at the University of Texas for nine years before going to the Naval Academy two years ago. He also coached the Longhorn basket- ball team for one year. He was graduated from Ohio State University, where he starred in both football and baseball. His professional baseball career was with Waco in the Texas League and in the Western League. In making the announcement of the acquisition of Karow, Athletic Di- rector Homer Norton said the new man would work with the ends and backs in spring football practice. Mr. Karow married a Texas girl and it is understood that one reason the Aggies were able to get him was the desire of the Karow family to return to the Southwest. John W. Blalock, ’36, is office manager for the McMurrey Re- fining Company and is located at Troup, Texas. Herbert H. Nordsieck, who re- ceived his masters degree in 1936, is an assistant in the Chemistry Department at Cornell University and is living at 610 E. Buffalo Street, Ithaca, New York. Moylan E. Laas, ’37, is a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army and is located at Fort Sam Houston. Sam N. Davidson, ’35, writes to have his address changed from Burnet to Box 415, Eagle Lake, Texas. W. L.
