MACHINE GUNNERS MAKING RECORDS The juniors in the Infantry branch of the R. O. T. C. at the College are completing one of the most interest- ing phases of their work, that of firing the machine guns on the 1000 inch range. A large number of the men have turned in excellent records, and almost without exception the en- tire class achieved qualification. Of the men who have already com- pleted firing, some 149 in number, there are to be found 32 expert gun- ners, 91 ‘sharpshooters, and 26 marks- men. To qualify as an expert calls for a score of 290 or more out of a possible 400; for a sharpshooter, 265 or above out of a possible 400; and for a marksman, 240 or above out of a possible 400. Fifteen of the expert gunners had a score which exceeded 300 peints, and at the present time R. D. Wilcox leads the scoring with a high mark of 318. When the firing is completed, the men having the 15 highest scores will be allowed to com- pete for a gold medal, which is given each year to the man making the highest score in the junior .class. Ware, instructor of the Course, it is much more difficult to fire than the one used last year, known as Course A, although Course A is the one used by the Army at this time. Captain Ware expresses him- self as being very well pleased by the shooting done by the men of the jun- ior class. —— The great disk of feathers around each eye of an owl gathers and con- centrates every bit of light toward the eye so that owls can see as well in twilight as other birds see in the day. zd
