The world takes its hat off to the fellow who puts fifty per cent into it and stands on its head for those who put one hundred per cent.” The world seldom has oppor- tunity to stand on its head. The claim is made that the old quality magazine | has been weak since its journalistic offsprirg began to sweep America but in the words of Mr. Canby there will always be a place for the illus- trated magazine, dignified, respecta- ble, certain to contain something that! the reader of taste can peruse with pleasure. The brood of special mag- azines for the literati and the ad- vanced will not take its plaez.” However, a tendency in the jublic to become more vigorously intellec-| tual through the aid of higher edu- | cation is now initiating a revival of | the reviews and weeklies, Mrs. Grout | agrees. : Turning to a consideration of the] veeklies Mrs. Grout quoted Albert | Schinz as saying that they are really | the most important publications in America at present, and says that | Mr. Canby places periodicals like The | Outlook, The Independent and Van- | ity Fair in the typical American mag- | azine class. | “By weeklies we usually mean the | New Republic, The Nation, The Free-| man, The Dial and The Weekly Re- | view”, she said. “They are all form- ed on an old English model, devoted to the spreading of opinion and con- secrated to the propagation of intel- ligence. To quote Mr. Canby again: ‘They have distinctly affected Amer- ican thinking, and may yet affect our action in pclitics, education and social relations, generally.’ ” . AL RP Te Yn STUDENT WILL INSTALL RADIO SETS IN HOMES FOR $45.00 There are many people who would like to have a radio set, but believe that unless an extremely high price is paid, an efficient set cannot be pur- chased. If one wishes to listen to music from far away Europe, of course many tubes and very expen- sive apparatus must be used, but if one is satisfied with the larger sta- tions in the United States, a radio set that will fulfill these conditions may be purchased at a very reasonable | rate. For $45.00 I will completely install a neat radio set that will not radiate or squeal, and that receives stations as far as 2,000 miles away. | Jchn C.
