HEAD OF COLLEGE SOIL SURVEY COMPLETES FIELD WORK WICHITA COUNTY With the completion of the field work in the soil survey of Wichita county the past week by W. T. Car- ter, Jr., chief of the Division of Soil Survey, of the Agricultural Experi- ment Station of the College the work of the division has extended tc 193 counties of the state covering an area ' of 115,880,256 acres, of which 26,337,- 856 acres received a detailed survey, the remainder having been given a reconnoissance survey. Due to the variety of soils in East- ern Texas a reconnoissance survey is of little value and for that reason progress of soil survey in that section is much slower but in the western area where there are wide strerches of uniform soils a less detailed sur- vey issufficient at present and exten- sive work as has been done. Excepting . the Trans-Pecos region the entire western two thirds of the state, in- | cluding 134 counties is now surveyed in reconnoissance. Within this area several counties farther east will be surveyed in detail as rapidly as they can be reached Dr. B. Youngblood, director of the Experiment Station said in announcing the work already done. Mr. Carter will now turn his at- tention from Wichita county to field wcrk in Milam, Nacogdoches and Hi- dalgo counties.
