There is illum- ination within and a sound of buzzing { fans coming from the interior of the compartments. There are glass doors. If you go to these and peer within | you see parallel trays of small oval objects that are very similar to rolls of bakers dough. Some are a light brown as if they had been under heat i long enough to be partly baked. With ear to the door you hear an ensemble of chirping sounds, and your mem- ory recalls the myth of the “forty blackbirds baked in a pie”, still cling- ing to its vision of an oven full of | dough nuggets. A closer examina tion reveals the small ovals to eggs, white and brown eggs and i you peer closely into the sable light of the bottom you see that there is a soft downy floor covering of soft furry bodies working ceaselessly a- gainst each other. There is the met- amorphosis in all its stages worked out before your eyes. Then these little balls of fluff and down are removed and you learn that indistinguishable of individuality carefully kept for them and attached in index form to their little right wing on a tin band by a husbandman who gives them mothering care in their tender days of early life. From these incubators are taken 4000 of the little fluffy balls every Friday. Or in other words one-third of the egg capacity generates every week. Most of the chicks belong to he Station but the capacity of the hatchery is a little moré than is need- d for the pedigree hatching business of the farm and this space is being vented to local people at the regular commercial rate. The same care and scientific attention that is given to he purebred stock of the station is THE QUESTION of what is new in Spring: cloth: ing and furnishings for men need not trouble you in the least— A trip through our store will provide THE ANSWER DROP IN OFTEN T. K. LAWRENCE — given to the eggs and chickens of customers of the hatchery. At times day-old chicks can be pur- chased also. el | “THE CALL OF THE CANYON” | cardo Cortez and Fred Huntley.
