    RESOLUTION OF
HIGHWAY MEET
(Continued from Page 1)
will enable the state to conform to
the requirements of the Federal Aid
Act and to receive the benefits of Fed-
eral Aid; and that the study of High-
way Economics, Highway Transport,
Highway Engineering and Safety Ed-
ucation be given special emphasis in
the educational system of the state,
that recognizing. the inter-relation be-
tween efficient rural education and
improved highways the educators,
press and public officials of Texas
should exert every energy toward the
upbuilding of the State Highway Sys-
tem, and that these resolutions be
distributed to the Press of the

DISCUSSION OF
BRAHMA CATTLE
(Continued from Page 1)
weights (taken at 45 day intervals)
were compared. Hereford steers and
three-eights Brahma steers ran very
close all year, sometimes one and
sometimes the other being ahead. The
three-eights Brahma heifers were a
little lighter than the Hereford heifers
all season. The numbers are too
small to ‘be conclusive and several
facts should be considered in whatever
tentative opinion is drawn from these
results. One is that this was a very
dry year in that region, a fact which
should be favorable to the Brahmas on
account of their superior resistance to
drouth and scant food.
that Sonora is free of ticks and rather
free of insect pests as compared to
the coast country. This did not give
the Brahmas a chance to show their
greater freedom from insect annoy-
ance. Another very important fact
was that the three-quarters Brahma
bull weighed 1250 pounds while the |
Hereford bulls weighed from 1550 to
1600 pounds during the breeding sea-
son. This should have given the
Hereford calves a distinctly heavier
weight than the Brahmas. One can
only say that the grade Brahmas
probably have real merit even for the
conditions of West Texas and almost
certainly do for the coast country and
South Texas. It is planned to con-
tinue the experiments for a number
of years until there are numbers
enough under all sorts of conditions,
Another is
to answer conclusively questions about
them. Present opinion among ranch-
ers who raise Brahma cattle in the
coast country, is that the best plan
is to keep cow herds of from one-
fourth to five eights Brahma blood and
use good beef bulls on them.
Doctor Lush also traced the history
of Brahma cattle in this country re-
ferring to five importations: Davir
in 1849; Barrows in 1854; Montgom-
ery and Frost some time previous to
1891; Hagenbeck in 1904; and the one
large one financed by Pierce and
O’Connor, and directed by Colonel
Borden in 1906. All the purebred
Brahma cattle in the United States
are now owned by the Pierce Estate
under the management of Colonel
Borden, but large high-grade herds
toria, and others. The McFadden
herd is one of the longest established.

THE JOY OF NOW.
By Edgar A. Guest.
These are the days we shall talk
about
In the years to come, my brother,
These are the days we shall single
out
As richer than any other;
| When time has silenced each wrink-
led brow,
{ Then we shall treasure the friends
| of now.
i Today we are building our Long Ago,
These are our happy years,
These are the joys we shall yearn
to know
And see through the mist of tears;
This is the street and these the tres
That shall brighten our glorious
memories,
These are the tales we shall gladly:
tell
To our children’s children then
Th's is the youth with its mag’e speil
We shall live in our dreams again
And we shall discover what now is
hid—
The joy there was .in the deeds we
did.
But now we hastily pass them by
And the laughter is swiftly sped,
We look on joy with a careless ey2
While memory wa'ts ahead;
But these shall dawn with a bright.
