Office: a Room 113, first floor Academic Building WILLIAM BENNETT BIZZELL President of the College FRANK ©. MARTIN Secretary of Publicity (By Dr. Hiram A. Boaz.) Man is the chosen creation of God and is the material glory of the world, Dr. Hiram A. Boaz, president of Southern Methodist University, declared yesterday morning in & ser- mon at the First Methodist Church, South. It was Dr. Boaz’s first ap- pearance in a pulpit in a DNailas church since his recent ascendar :y to the o__ce of president of S. M. U. Prior to his election to the head of the university he was secre'ary of ‘he board of church exteusica nf the Methodist Caur:h, South, at Il.ouie- ville, Ky. Dr. Boaz was introduced by Dr. S. H. C. Burgin, pastor of the First Methodist Church. The invocation was spoken by Dr. H. M. Whaling, Jr., vice-president of S. M. U. Dn Boaz’s topic was “Christian Citizen- ship.” He said that man always has been regarded as a material being. “When regarded in that light,” he declared, “the man sinks into insig- nificance. He is also immaterial, tangible and intangible, for through- out his life he is in touch with that ethereal realm above. His value is best expressed in his consciousness, which can attain to the highest de- gree. “Man is the whole universe. Jle is immortal and he is endowed with the power of thought. Without a doubt man is and should be the glory of kis home, of the Nation and of his Cre- ator. The glory of these United States lies not in its lengthening miles or railroads, in its arteries of commerce, in its favorable tride hal- ance, but in the degree and character of its manhood. We want a great country, but to realize that we must have great men to direct the desti- | nies of this Commonwealth. There | never was such a need, a call, for | men, real men, tall men, sun-crown- ed men, as now. We need men who can and will do things.” The elements that determine what a man will do in this life and what he may accomplish in this world is iroc- ed directly from childhood to matur- | ity, according to Dr. Boaz. “Heredity | and environment shape the man,” he | asserted. ‘His first environmen: is | his home. Home, in my opinion, | should be a little bit of heaven carv- | ed out from above and brought down to this earth so that men and | women may rear their children | aright. Another environment is the | Church, and still another is the in- fluence of Christian educational in- stitutions.” Also Dr. Boaz said that | other elements were the power of the human will and divine grace.
