COMPLIMENTS ARE PAID TO PROF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING The Portland Cement Association of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has writ- ten the following complimentary re- marks on Professor Roy M. Green’s latest bulletin on highway construc- tion which was recently sent to them by their request. “This will acknowledge receipt of two copies of Texas Engineering Ex- periment Station Bulletin No. 22, for which we thank you. We shail certainly appreciate receiving copies of any future investigations of pave- ments. Although the soil and cli- mate conditions of Minnesota are en- many arguments contained in Mr. Green’s treatise apply to all cases. One of the most pleasing features | of this Bulletin is the fact that when- ever Mr. Green makes a suggestion | in regard to work, his criticism is not | in the nature of rapping, pat rather constructive. His discussions of the features of | pavements in general, are very broad guaged and the information given along these lines is extremely valuable to us, in fact we are send- ing mimeographed copies of Mr. Green’s arguments against pavement | guarantees to all of the field engi- neers operating out of this office, which we believe will be very valu- able to them in their work.” pf — GIVES FORMULA FOR CONTROL OF WEEVILS Replying to an inquiry regarding control of weevil in wheat, A. P. Swallow, entomologist, gives out the! following information: Carbon bisulphide or highlife should be placed in an open vessel, or preferably two or three open vessels, on top of the grain and not on the bottom. The gas given off by this chemical is very heavy and has 2a tendency to go to the bottom. It will not come up. It will probably take more than | one gallon of highlife to sufficiently | permeate 750 bushels of wheat. Highlife serves to kill the adult and larvae of the weevil. effect whatever on the egg; there- fore, it is necessary that this applica- | tion be made for two or three times at intervals of about two weeks in| order that the weevils hatching from the eggs may be killed. Carbon bisulphide will not be ef- fective if placed on the botton of the | bin.
